The w1 master driver includes a complete open drain emulation
reimplementation among other things.
This converts the driver and all board files using it to use
GPIO descriptors associated with the device to look up the
GPIO wire, as well ass the optional pull-up GPIO line.
When probed from the device tree, the driver will just pick
descriptors and use them right off. For the two board files
in the kernel, we add descriptor lookups so we do not need
to keep any old platform data handling around for the GPIO
lines.
As the platform data is also a state container for this driver,
we augment it to contain the GPIO descriptors.
w1_gpio_write_bit_dir() and w1_gpio_write_bit_val() are gone
since this pair was a reimplementation of open drain emulation
which is now handled by gpiolib.
The special "linux,open-drain" flag is a bit of mishap here:
it has the same semantic as the same flags in I2C: it means
that something in the platform is setting up the line as
open drain behind our back. We handle this the same way as
in I2C.
To drive the pull-up, we need to bypass open drain emulation
in gpiolib for the line, and this is done by driving it high
using gpiod_set_raw_value() which has been augmented to have
the semantic of overriding the open drain emulation.
We also augment the documentation to reflect the way to pass
GPIO descriptors from the machine.

w1_therm_eeprom() and w1_DS18B20_precision() decrement THERM_REFCNT
on error paths, while they did not increment it yet.
read_therm() unlocks bus mutex on some error paths,
while it is not acquired.
The patch makes sure all the functions keep the balance in usage of
the mutex and the THERM_REFCNT.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

The w1_ds28e17 driver from the next part of this patch needs to emit
single-bit read timeslots to the DS28E17. The w1 subsystem already
has this function but it is not exported outside drivers/w1/w1_io.c
This subpatch exports the w1_touch_bit symbol with EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL,
same as the other exported symbols in drivers/w1/w1_io.c
May be also useful later for writing drivers for other Onewire chips
which do single-bit communication.

platform_get_irq() returns an error code, but the omap_hdq
driver ignores it and always returns -ENXIO. This is not correct,
and prevents -EPROBE_DEFER from being propagated properly.
Notice that platform_get_irq() no longer returns 0 on error.
Print error message and propagate the return value of
platform_get_irq on failure.

Like other subsystems we should be able to define slave devices outside
of the w1 directory. To do this we move public facing interface
definitions to include/linux/w1.h and rename the internal definition
file to w1_internal.h.
As w1_family.h and w1_int.h contained almost entirely public
driver interface definitions we simply removed these files and
moved the remaining definitions into w1_internal.h.
With this we can now start to move slave devices out of w1/slaves and
into the subsystem based on the function they implement, again like
other drivers.

The only use of assert() is in matrox_w1.c and is used to check the input
to probe() from the PCI subsystem for NULL values, these are guaranteed
to be populated and no other PCI driver makes this check, remove this.
As this was the only definition in w1_log.h, remove this also.

Near the beginning of w1_attach_slave_device() we increment a w1 master
reference count.
Later, when we are going to exit this function without actually attaching
a slave device (due to failure of __w1_attach_slave_device()) we need to
decrement this reference count back.

This adds a driver for a DS2405 1-wire single-channel addressable switch.
The DS2405 can also work as a single-channel binary remote sensor.
This driver supports two attributes: "state" and "output" which are the
same attribute names as supported by existing DS2406, DS2408 and DS2413
drivers.

ds2490 driver was doing USB transfers from / to buffers on a stack.
This is not permitted and made the driver non-working with vmapped stacks.
Since all these transfers are done under the same bus_mutex lock we can
simply use shared buffers in a device private structure for two most common
of them.
While we are at it, let's also fix a comparison between int and size_t in
ds9490r_search() which made the driver spin in this function if state
register get requests were failing.

Commit e93762bbf6 ("w1: masters: omap_hdq: add support for 1-wire
mode") added a statement to clear the hdq_irqstatus flags in
hdq_read_byte().
If the hdq reading process is scheduled slowly or interrupts are
disabled for a while the hardware read activity might already be
finished on entry of hdq_read_byte(). And hdq_isr() already has set the
hdq_irqstatus to 0x6 (can be seen in debug mode) denoting that both, the
TXCOMPLETE and RXCOMPLETE interrupts occurred in parallel.
This means there is no need to wait and the hdq_read_byte() can just
read the byte from the hdq controller.
By resetting hdq_irqstatus to 0 the read process is forced to be always
waiting again (because the if statement always succeeds) but the
hardware will not issue another RXCOMPLETE interrupt. This results in a
false timeout.
After such a situation the hdq bus hangs.

PLATFORM_DEVID_AUTO can be used to have the platform core assign a
unique ID instead of manually creating one with IDA. Do this in all
applicable drivers.

Since many temperature sensors come "preconfigured" with a lower
precision, people are stuck at that precision when running on a kernel
based device (unlike the Dallas 1Wire library for e.g. Arduino, which
supports writing the configuration/scratchpad). This patch adds write
support for the scratchpad/precision registers via w1_slave sysfs.

This commit enables the active pullup (APU bit) by default for
the DS2482 1-Wire master.
>From the DS2482 datasheet:
"The APU bit controls whether an active pullup (controlled slew-rate
transistor) or a passive pullup (Rwpu resistor) will be used to drive
a 1-Wire line from low to high. When APU = 0, active pullup is disabled
(resistor mode). Active Pullup should always be selected unless there is
only a single slave on the 1-Wire line."
According to the module author, Ben Gardner:
"It doesn't look like active pullup would cause any hurt if there
is only a single slave."
And my tests with multiple and single slaves on 1-Wire bus
confirms that.
This active pullup can be manually disabled using the introduced
module parameter:
active_pullup = 0

w1_process() calls try_to_freeze(), but the thread doesn't mark itself
freezable through set_freezable(), so the try_to_freeze() call is useless.

hdq_usecount was set to zero after a successful read, so
omap_hdq_put could not properly free resources which leads
e.g. to increasing usecounts in lsmod output

Let's stop using legacy platform driver hooks for power management and
switch to using the standard dev_pm_ops-based hooks.
Also, instead of guarding PM methods with #ifdef CONFIG_PM annotate them
as __maybe_unused as it provides better compile coverage.

Currently, memsetting and kfreeing the device is bad behaviour. The
device will have a reference count of 1 and hence can cause trouble
because it has kfree'd. Proper way to handle a failed device_register is
to call put_device right after it fails.

This patch provides support for the DS28EA00 digital thermometer.
The DS28EA00 provides an additional two pins for implementing a sequence
detection algorithm. This feature allows you to determine the physical
location of the chip in the 1-wire bus without needing pre-existing
knowledge of the bus ordering. Support is provided through the sysfs
w1_seq file. The file will contain a single line with an integer value
representing the device index in the bus starting at 0.

A temperature conversion can take 750 ms and when possible the
w1_therm slave driver drops the bus_mutex to allow other bus
operations, but that includes operations such as a periodic slave
search, which can remove this slave when it is no longer detected.
If that happens the sl->family_data will be freed and set to NULL
causing w1_slave_show to crash when it wakes up.

1/ change request_module call to zero-pad single digit
family numbers. This appears to be the intention of
the code, but not what it actually does.
This means that the alias created for W1_FAMILY_SMEM_01
might actually be useful.
2/ Define a family name for the BQ27000 battery charge monitor.
Unfortunately this is the same number as W1_FAMILY_SMEM_01
so if both a compiled on a system, one module might need to
be blacklisted.
3/ Add a MODULE_ALIAS for the bq27000.

Some preliminary work at making use of this driver led me to implement
CRC-16 checks on read and write to deal with the occasional glitchiness of
the 1-Wire bus. The revised driver (attached) returns an I/O error if the
CRC check fails. When reading the chip's state, either you get a valid
indication or you get an I/O error. When changing its state, either the
change is successful or an I/O error is returned.

According to the i.MX reference manual, the read/write bit operations
takes from 60 us to 120 us.
This patch optimizes mxc_w1_ds2_touch_bit() function to use proper
value for such delay. Nevertheless, a small margin for the timeout has
been added for the case if clock frequency is inaccurate.

According to the i.MX reference manual, the reset procedure and
"presence" pulse takes 511 and 512 us, respectively. Measurement for
i.MX27 is about 1100 us. There is no need to wait Reset+Presence
more than this time.
This patch optimizes mxc_w1_ds2_reset_bus() function to use proper
value for delay after w1 bus reset. Nevertheless, a small margin for

w1_process_callbacks() expects to be called with dev->list_mutex held,
but it is the fact only in w1_process(). __w1_remove_master_device()
calls w1_process_callbacks() after it releases list_mutex.
The patch fixes __w1_remove_master_device() to acquire list_mutex
for w1_process_callbacks().

Applications can submit a set of commands in one packet to the kernel,
and in some cases it is required such as reading the temperature
sensor results. This adds an option W1_CN_BUNDLE to the flags of
cn_msg to request the kernel to reply in one packet for efficiency.
The cn_msg flags now check for unknown flag values and return an error
if one is seen. See "Proper handling of unknown flags in system

This corrects the ack values returned as per the protocol standard,
namely the original ack for status messages and seq + 1 for all others
such as the data returned from a read.
Some of the common variable names have been standardized as follows.

__w1_attach_slave_device calls device_add which calls w1_bus_notify
which calls the w1_bq27000 slave driver, which calls
platform_device_add and device_add and deadlocks on getting
&(&priv->bus_notifier)->rwsem as it is still held in the previous
device_add. This avoids the problem by processing the family
add/remove outside of the slave device_add call.
Commit 47eba33a09 introduced this deadlock and added
a KOBJ_ADD, as the add was already reported in device_register two add
events were being sent. This change suppresses the device_register
add so that any slave device sysfs entries are setup before the add
goes out.
Belisko Marek reported this change fixed the deadlock he was seeing on
ARM device tree, while testing on my x86-64 system never saw the
deadlock.

If the message type is W1_MASTER_CMD or W1_SLAVE_CMD, then a reference
is taken when searching for the slave or master device. If there
isn't any following data m->len (mlen is a copy) is 0 and packing up
the message for later execution is skipped leaving nothing to
decrement the reference counts.
Way back when, m->len was checked before the search that increments the
reference count, but W1_LIST_MASTERS has no additional data, the check
was moved in 9be62e0b2f causing this bug.
This change reorders to put the check before the reference count is
incremented avoiding the problem.

of_get_gpio() might return -EPROBE_DEFER meaning that the driver
providing the gpio isn't ready yet. If that happens for the first gpio
the resulting kernel output without this patch is:
w1-gpio somename: Failed to parse DT
platform somename: Driver w1-gpio requests probe deferral
The first message is misleading and so is suppressed with this patch.
Further if determining the gpio to switch the external pullup yields
-EPROBE_DEFER this error should be passed back to the caller instead of
just continuing without pullup.

On 64 bit systems, a large value for "long tmp" is truncated when
assigning to "int md->max_slave_count" so we still end up with a value
less than one despite the "tmp < 1" check.
This is more of a problem for static checkers than a real life issue,
but it's simple enough to fix.

ds1wm.c was locking bus_mutex, but inside the loop and I missed it.
Reverting ds1wm.c to the previous version.

The bus_mutex needs to be taken to serialize access to a specific bus.
netlink wasn't updated when bus_mutex was added and was calling
without that lock held, and not all of the masters were holding the
bus_mutex in a search. This was causing the ds2490 hardware to stop
responding when both netlink and /sys slaves were executing bus
commands at the same time.

The first line printed from w1_slave gives the context of the w1
device. So does the second line, but if the CRC check failed, the
second line contains the last successful result. It is confusing when
it prints the temperature next to the line that might be a previous
conversion and has nothing to do with that printed temperature value.
Modify the code to store the last good conversion in family_data,
which is designed for custom data structures.

The hardware search was failing without the COMM_RST flag. Enabled
the flag and rewrote the function to handle more than one buffer of
results and to continuing where the search left off. Remove hardware
search note from the limitations now that it works. The "w1: ds2490
USB setup fixes" change went from 23.16 seconds to about 3 seconds,
this takes the time for the search down to .307346 seconds.

Calling usb_reset_configuration after usb_set_interface resets the
interface that was just selected, so call reset first.
Using alternative 3 greatly speeds the one wire search.
alt 0 or 1, 10ms int, 23.16 seconds
alt 2 or 3, 1ms int, 2.99 to 3.05 seconds
Use usb_interrupt_msg not usb_bulk_msg as it is an interrupt pipe
(bulk worked, it was just technically the wrong call).

Unicast one wire replies back to the sender portid to avoid multiple
programs getting each other's messages, especially as the response
can't be uniquely identified with the sequence coming from the
requesting program when both programs generate the same id. Continue
to broadcast events such as add/remove master/slave devices.

Netlink is a socket interface and is expected to be asynchronous.
Clients can now make w1 requests without blocking by making use of the
w1_master thread to process netlink commands which was previously only
used for doing an automatic bus search.

Introduce new commands to add, remove, and list slave devices through
the netlink interface. This can be useful to skip the search on a
static network. They could previously only be added or removed
through automatic search or sysfs, and this allows a program to only
use netlink.
Only allocate memory when needed, so move kzalloc into w1_get_slaves
where it was used.

w1_max_slave_count is only used to abort the search early
or take a fast search (when 1), so there isn't any reason to not allow
it to be updated through sysfs. Memory is not allocated based on
the current value and 10 is a rather low base number, increasing to
64, and printing a message the first time the count is reached and
there were more devices to discover to let the user know why not
all the devices were found.

Before 63706172f3 "rework kthread_stop()" kthread_should_stop()
always returned false when called from a non-kthread task, after it
would oops as a non-kthread didn't have that structure and netlink was
calling search from a thread which wasn't a kthread. 9d1817cab2
"w1: fix oops when w1_search is called from netlink connector",
modified the code to avoid calling kthread_stop from a netlink thread.
Introduce a w1_master flag and bit W1_ABORT_SEARCH to identify abort
to cleanly support both kthread and netlink search abort. A search
can take seconds to run, so it is important to abort early if the
hardware is removed in the middle of a search.

Previous logic,

send data; clear;
The logic error is, if there isn't space send the buffer and clear,
but the slave wasn't added to the now empty buffer loosing that slave
id. It also should have been "if (avail >= 8)" because when it is 8,
there is space.
Instead, if there isn't space send and clear the buffer, then there is
always space for the slave id.

On architectures where long is more then 32 bits, modifying a 32-bit field
with set_bit (and other atomic bit operations) may cause bytes following
the field to by modified.
Because the endianness of the bits within a field is the native endianness
of the CPU[1], on big-endian machines, bit number zero is in the last byte
of the field.
Therefore, `set_bit(0, ptr)' on a 64-bit big-endian machine is roughly
equivalent to `((char *)ptr)[7] |= 1', and since w1 driver uses a 32-bit
field for holding the flags, this causes bytes beyond the field to be
modified.

Native atomic bit operations are defined to operate on objects
aligned to the size of an "unsigned long" C data type, and are
least of that size. The endianness of the bits within each
"unsigned long" are the native endianness of the cpu.

request_module for w1 slave modules needs to be called with the w1
master mutex unlocked. Because w1_attach_slave_device gets always(?)
called with mutex locked, we need to temporarily unlock the w1 master
mutex for the loading of the w1 slave module.

Introduce a check to make sure that fops are only called if they have
been defined by the slave module.

W1 slave sysfs files are created _after_ userspace is notified that the
device has been added to the system. Fix that race by moving the
creation/remove of the files to the bus notifier that is there for doing
this type of thing.

Power-up timing
The DS2408 is sensitive to the power-on slew rate and can inadvertently
power up with a test mode feature enabled. When this occurs, the P0 port
does not respond to the Channel Access Write command. For most reliable
operation, it is recommended to disable the test mode after every power-on
reset using the Disable Test Mode sequence shown below. The 64-bit ROM
code must be transmitted in the same bit sequence as with the Match ROM
command, i.e., least significant bit first. This precaution is
recommended in parasite power mode (VCC pin connected to GND) as well as
with VCC power.

GENERIC_GPIO now synonymous with GPIOLIB. There are no longer any valid
cases for enableing GENERIC_GPIO without GPIOLIB, even though it is
possible to do so which has been causing confusion and breakage. This
branch does the work to completely eliminate GENERIC_GPIO.
However, it is not trivial to just create a branch to remove it. Over
the course of the v3.9 cycle more code referencing GENERIC_GPIO has been
added to linux-next that conflicts with this branch. The following must
be done to resolve the conflicts when merging this branch into mainline:
* "git grep CONFIG_GENERIC_GPIO" should return 0 hits. Matches should be
replaced with CONFIG_GPIOLIB
* "git grep '\bGENERIC_GPIO\b'" should return 1 hit in the Chinese
documentation.
* Selectors of GENERIC_GPIO should be turned into selectors of GPIOLIB
* definitions of the option in architecture Kconfig code should be deleted.

Reading the code I found problematic kthread_should_stop call from netlink
connector which causes the oops. After applying a patch, I've been testing
owfs+w1 setup for nearly two days and it seems to work very reliable (no
hangs, no memleaks etc).
More detailed description and possible fix is given below:
Function w1_search can be called from either kthread or netlink callback.
While the former works fine, the latter causes oops due to kthread_should_stop
invocation.
This patch adds a check if w1_search is serving netlink command, skipping
kthread_should_stop invocation if so.

Commit 8a1861d997 ("w1-gpio: Simplify & get rid of defines") changed
(apparently unknowingly) the driver to a hotpluggable platform-device
driver but did not not update the section markers for probe and remove
(to __devinit/exit, which have since been removed). A later commit fixed
the section mismatch for probe, but left remove marked with __exit.

The base patch of the branch changes the format of the dts files to a
slightly different format that makes it easier to do derivative board
definitions, but it also introduces a lot of churn in the process since
every line of the file is touched.
On top of that are a handful of the regular changes; enabling more boards
as DT-based instead of legacy board files (mx25pdk), enabling another
driver for devicetree and thus adding bindings (onewire), etc.
I'm not happy about the churn, and will likely not take it for other platforms
in the future.

Convert all uses of devm_request_and_ioremap() to the newly introduced
devm_ioremap_resource() which provides more consistent error handling.
devm_ioremap_resource() provides its own error messages so all explicit
error messages can be removed from the failure code paths.

w1_therm includes some obsolete code to detect bad_roms, this is no
longer relevant.
The retry code is only used for this bad_rom test, however there is a
CRC check that detects a bad read, but does not trigger a retry. This
patch removes all the bad_rom code and uses the CRC check to trigger
retries.

The various devm_ functions allocate memory that is released when a driver
detaches. This patch uses these functions for data that is allocated in
the probe function of a platform device and is only freed in the remove
function.
At the same time, this fixes two faults. First, mdev, the result of
kzalloc, was never freed. Second, on failure of ioremap, 0 was returned.
This has been replaced by -EBUSY, which was the failure value for the call
to request_mem_region, with which the call to ioremap has been combined.
The warning message on failure of ioremap is dropped, because
devm_request_and_ioremap already gives such messages on failure.
Finally, the initial call to platform_get_resource is moved closer to the
call to devm_request_and_ioremap, which takes care of checking whether its
result is NULL, implying that a test on the result of this call to
platform_get_resource is not needed.

These devices are not available on other architectures, so
let's limit them to omap.
If the driver subsystem maintainers want to build test
system wide changes without building for each target,
it's easy to carry a test patch that just strips out the

With the new i.mx clock framework the mxc_w1 clock is registered as:

In the process of porting boards to devicetree implemenation, we should
keep information about external circuitry where they belong - the
individual drivers.
This patch adds a way to specify a GPIO to drive the (optional) external
pull-up logic, rather than using a function pointer for that.

Here's the big driver core pull request for 3.6-rc1.
Unlike 3.5, this kernel should be a lot tamer, with the printk changes now
settled down. All we have here is some extcon driver updates, w1 driver
updates, a few printk cleanups that weren't needed for 3.5, but are good to
have now, and some other minor fixes/changes in the driver core.
All of these have been in the linux-next releases for a while now.

HDQ/1-wire registers are 32 bits long, even if the register contents
fit into 8 bits, so accesses must be 32-bit aligned. Evidently the
OMAP2/3 interconnects allowed the driver to get away with 8 bit accesses,
but the OMAP4 puts a stop to that:

The OMAP4430 ES2 Rev X TRM does warn about this restriction in section
23.2.6.2 "HDQ/1-Wire Registers".
Fixes the crash on OMAP4430 ES2 Pandaboard. Tested also on OMAP34xx and
OMAP2420; it seems to work fine on those chips, although due to the lack
of boards with HDQ/1-wire devices here, a more indepth test was not
possible.
