The offset field of the scatterlist entry *after* the last valid scatterlist
entry was used instead of the first scatterlist entry (as was the intention
of this code).
This worked fine until the kzalloc of the sglist was replaced with kmalloc
and sg_init_table only zeroed the exact needed length. Apparently kzalloc
zeroes a bit more than is strictly necessary so the offset field was
always 0 in the past.
But now the offset field was suddenly random and this led to broken captures.

The xc5000 firmware download process can be slow on certain devices.
Add a module option, "init_fw" to perform the firmware download during
xc5000_attach(), which would get the firmware download over with well
before any tune request is made.
When this option is enabled, it will reduce the time it takes to get a
signal lock during the first tune after driver load, but will add a few
seconds to the driver initialization.

with this config:
http://redhat.com/~mingo/misc/config-Tue_May_20_18_11_34_CEST_2008.bad
the reason is another kconfig tool bug that has to be worked around in
the driver's Kconfig file: if FW_LOADER is selected in a second
dependency, that is not properly propagated up the dependencies.
in this case, FW_LOADER is selected from MEDIA_TUNER_XC2028:
config MEDIA_TUNER_XC2028
tristate "XCeive xc2028/xc3028 tuners"
depends on VIDEO_MEDIA && I2C
depends on HOTPLUG
select FW_LOADER
which got selected by MEDIA_TUNER:
config MEDIA_TUNER
tristate
default VIDEO_MEDIA && I2C
depends on VIDEO_MEDIA && I2C
select FW_LOADER if !MEDIA_TUNER_CUSTOMIZE && HOTPLUG
but the kconfig tool did not pick up this second-order dependency and
allowed CONFIG_FW_LOADER=m to be selected - in which case the build
fails.
the workaround i found was to move the select of FW_LOADER one level up,
so that the buggy kconfig tool can notice it and can act appropriately.
This problem can probably be worked around in other ways as well, i went
for the minimal fix.
Obviously, the kconfig tool should be fixed, it is not reasonable to
expect driver authors to do manual dependency resolution (that kconfig
itself already does) and uglify the Kconfig files. The kconfig tool did
nothing to warn about this situation and did not prevent this faulty
.config from being constructed.

The current code passes a context pointer in the xc5000_config struct.
This context pointer is used in the tuner_callback function, used to
reset the device after firmware download.
The xc5000_config struct is a static structure, whose .priv member was
being assigned before calling xc5000_attach(). If there are more than
one of the same device type installed on a single system, the last one
to assign xc5000_config.priv will "win", and all others will cease to
function properly.
This patch passes the context pointer in xc5000_attach() rather that
storing it within the static struct xc5000_config.

Since:
1) FW_LOADER is defined as:
config FW_LOADER
tristate "Userspace firmware loading support"
depends on HOTPLUG
2) several V4L/DVB driver just selects it;
3) select is not smart enough to auto-select HOTPLUG, if select FW_LOADER.
So, All drivers that select FW_LOADER should also depend on HOTPLUG.
An easier solution (for the end-user perspective) would be to "select HOTPLUG".
However, live is not simple. This would cause recursive dependency issues like
this one:
drivers/usb/Kconfig:62:error: found recursive dependency: USB -> USB_OHCI_HCD
-> I2C -> MEDIA_TUNER -> MEDIA_TUNER_XC2028 -> HOTPLUG -> PCCARD -> PCMCIA ->

As pointed by Adrian Bunk, with I2C=m and VIDEO_DEV=y, videodev brokes.
This patch moves the functions that videodev needs from v4l2-common. It also
fixes some Kconfig changes.
After this patch, I2C=m / VIDEO_DEV=y will make v4l2 core statically linked
into kernel. v4l2-common will be m, and all V4L drivers will also be m.
This approach is very conservative, since it is possible to have V4L drivers
that don't need I2C or v4l2-common. The better is to map what drivers really
need v4l2-common, making them to select v4l2-common, and allowing the others to
be 'y', 'm' and 'n'.

Video_device_alloc returns the result of a kzalloc. In this case, the
value is stored in a local variable which is not copied elsewhere before
the point of the error return (video_register_device does not save its
first argument anywhere if it returns a negative value). Thus, a
video_device_release it needed before the error return.

The ttpci Kconfig file has bugs that cause it to fail in certain Kconfig
situations. The basic problem is that it selects certain drivers, but does
not depend on the dependencies of those drivers.
See http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.video4linux/35072
Using the Kconfig file also has some annoyances. For instance one can't turn
off AV7110 support unless you go down several options and first turn off
budget-patch support. Normally user selectable drivers are not forced on like
this.
The "AV7110 cards with Budget Patch" option is disabled if "Budget cards"
isn't on. Normally a driver appears nested under a driver it depends on, but
since drivers that don't depend on "Budget cards" are between the two options,
the config programs can't display the tree correctly.
The Makefile has an issue too. Some modules, ttpci-eeprom and budget-core,
appear in the Makefile under several different config symbols. If more than
one of these symbols is on, they will get added the to list of objects
multiple times. The normal convention is to have a config symbol just the
common object(s) and have the users of the that object either depend on or
select that config symbol.
This patch fixes all these issues. ttpci-eepom is under a new config symbol,
and so is the budget-core module. The four different budget card types appear
as sub-drivers under a main "SAA7146 DVB cards" option. Turning on
budget-patch doesn't force AV7110. Drivers using SAA7146_VV have the
necessary VIDEO_DEV dependency, so that it isn't possible to select SAA7146_VV
without V4L being on.
