There is a lot of broken firmware out there that don't really
expose the information the kernel requires when it comes with dealing
with GICv2:
(1) Firmware that only describes the first 4kB of GICv2
(2) Firmware that describe 128kB of CPU interface, while
the usable portion of the address space is between
60 and 68kB
So far, we only deal with (2). But we have platforms exhibiting
behaviour (1), resulting in two sub-cases:
(a) The GIC is occupying 8kB, as required by the GICv2 architecture
(b) It is actually spread 128kB, and this is likely to be a version
of (2)
This patch tries to work around both (a) and (b) by poking at
the outside of the described memory region, and try to work out
what is actually there. This is of course unsafe, and should
only be enabled if there is no way to otherwise fix the DT provided
by the firmware (we provide a "irqchip.gicv2_force_probe" option
to that effect).
Note that for the time being, we restrict ourselves to GICv2
implementations provided by ARM, since there I have no knowledge
of an alternative implementations. This could be relaxed if such
an implementation comes to light on a broken platform.

Document the latest updates on the isolcpus= boot option. While at it,
let's also fix the details about the preferred way to isolate a set of
CPUs from the scheduler general domains. Cpusets offer a much better
interface to achieve that.

Johan Hovold reported a heavy performance regression caused by lockdep
cross-release:

Currently cross-release performs unwind on every acquisition, but that
is very expensive.
This patch makes unwind optional and disables it by default and only
records acquire_ip.
Full stack traces are sometimes required for full analysis, in which
case a boot paramter, crossrelease_fullstack, can be specified.
On my qemu Ubuntu machine (x86_64, 4 cores, 512M), the regression was
fixed. We measure boot times with 'perf stat --null --repeat 10 $QEMU',
where $QEMU launches a kernel with init=/bin/true:
1. No lockdep enabled:

Currently the kernel relies on firmware to inform it whether or not the
CPU supports HTM and as long as the kernel was built with
CONFIG_PPC_TRANSACTIONAL_MEM=y then it will allow userspace to make
use of the facility.
There may be situations where it would be advantageous for the kernel
to not allow userspace to use HTM, currently the only way to achieve
this is to recompile the kernel with CONFIG_PPC_TRANSACTIONAL_MEM=n.
This patch adds a simple commandline option so that HTM can be
disabled at boot time.

Implement CPU alternatives, which allows to optionally patch newer
instructions at runtime, based on CPU facilities availability.
A new kernel boot parameter "noaltinstr" disables patching.
Current implementation is derived from x86 alternatives. Although
ideal instructions padding (when altinstr is longer then oldinstr)
is added at compile time, and no oldinstr nops optimization has to be
done at runtime. Also couple of compile time sanity checks are done:
1. oldinstr and altinstr must be <= 254 bytes long,
2. oldinstr and altinstr must not have an odd length.

alternative_2(oldinstr, altinstr1, facility1, altinstr2, facility2);
Both compile time and runtime padding consists of either 6/4/2 bytes nop
or a jump (brcl) + 2 bytes nop filler if padding is longer then 6 bytes.
.altinstructions and .altinstr_replacement sections are part of
__init_begin : __init_end region and are freed after initialization.

When rcutorture sees the rcutorture.stall_cpu kernel boot parameter,
it loops with preemption disabled, which does in fact normally
generate an RCU CPU stall warning message. However, there are test
scenarios that need the stalling CPU to have interrupts disabled.
This commit therefore adds an rcutorture.stall_cpu_irqsoff kernel
boot parameter that causes the stalling CPU to disable interrupts.

ThunderboltIP is a protocol created by Apple to tunnel IP/ethernet
traffic over a Thunderbolt cable. The protocol consists of configuration
phase where each side sends ThunderboltIP login packets (the protocol is
determined by UUID in the XDomain packet header) over the configuration
channel. Once both sides get positive acknowledgment to their login
packet, they configure high-speed DMA path accordingly. This DMA path is
then used to transmit and receive networking traffic.
This patch creates a virtual ethernet interface the host software can
use in the same way as any other networking interface. Once the
interface is brought up successfully network packets get tunneled over
the Thunderbolt cable to the remote host and back.
The connection is terminated by sending a ThunderboltIP logout packet
over the configuration channel. We do this when the network interface is
brought down by user or the driver is unloaded.

Current implementations of Intel Thunderbolt controllers will go
into a low power mode when not in use.
Many machines containing these controllers also have a GPIO wired up
that can force the controller awake. This is offered via a ACPI-WMI
interface intended to be manipulated by a userspace utility.
This mechanism is provided by Intel to OEMs to include in BIOS.
It uses an industry wide GUID that is populated in a separate _WDG
entry with no binary MOF.
This interface allows software such as fwupd to wake up thunderbolt
controllers to query the firmware version or flash new firmware.

Handle debugfs override edid and firmware edid at the low level to
transparently and completely replace the real edid. Previously, we
practically only used the modes from the override EDID, and none of the
other data, such as audio parameters.
This change also prevents actual EDID reads when the EDID is to be
overridden, but retains the DDC probe. This is useful if the reason for
preferring override EDID are problems with reading the data, or
corruption of the data.
Move firmware EDID loading from helper to core, as the functionality
moves to lower level as well. This will result in a change of module
parameter from drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware to drm.edid_firmware, which
arguably makes more sense anyway.
Some future work remains related to override and firmware EDID
validation. Like before, no validation is done for override EDID. The
firmware EDID is validated separately in the loader. Some unification
and deduplication would be in order, to validate all of them at the
drm_do_get_edid() level, like "real" EDIDs.

Patch series "cleanup zonelists initialization", v1.
This is aimed at cleaning up the zonelists initialization code we have
but the primary motivation was bug report [2] which got resolved but the
usage of stop_machine is just too ugly to live. Most patches are
straightforward but 3 of them need a special consideration.
Patch 1 removes zone ordered zonelists completely. I am CCing linux-api
because this is a user visible change. As I argue in the patch
description I do not think we have a strong usecase for it these days.
I have kept sysctl in place and warn into the log if somebody tries to
configure zone lists ordering. If somebody has a real usecase for it we
can revert this patch but I do not expect anybody will actually notice
runtime differences. This patch is not strictly needed for the rest but
it made patch 6 easier to implement.
Patch 7 removes stop_machine from build_all_zonelists without adding any
special synchronization between iterators and updater which I _believe_
is acceptable as explained in the changelog. I hope I am not missing
anything.
Patch 8 then removes zonelists_mutex which is kind of ugly as well and
not really needed AFAICS but a care should be taken when double checking
my thinking.
This patch (of 9):
Supporting zone ordered zonelists costs us just a lot of code while the
usefulness is arguable if existent at all. Mel has already made node
ordering default on 64b systems. 32b systems are still using
ZONELIST_ORDER_ZONE because it is considered better to fallback to a
different NUMA node rather than consume precious lowmem zones.
This argument is, however, weaken by the fact that the memory reclaim
has been reworked to be node rather than zone oriented. This means that
lowmem requests have to skip over all highmem pages on LRUs already and
so zone ordering doesn't save the reclaim time much. So the only
advantage of the zone ordering is under a light memory pressure when
highmem requests do not ever hit into lowmem zones and the lowmem
pressure doesn't need to reclaim.
Considering that 32b NUMA systems are rather suboptimal already and it
is generally advisable to use 64b kernel on such a HW I believe we
should rather care about the code maintainability and just get rid of
ZONELIST_ORDER_ZONE altogether. Keep systcl in place and warn if
somebody tries to set zone ordering either from kernel command line or
the sysctl.

The main changes in this cycle are support for three new, complex
hardware features of x86 CPUs:
- Add 5-level paging support, which is a new hardware feature on
upcoming Intel CPUs allowing up to 128 PB of virtual address space
and 4 PB of physical RAM space - a 512-fold increase over the old
limits. (Supercomputers of the future forecasting hurricanes on an
ever warming planet can certainly make good use of more RAM.)
Many of the necessary changes went upstream in previous cycles,
v4.14 is the first kernel that can enable 5-level paging.
This feature is activated via CONFIG_X86_5LEVEL=y - disabled by
default.

- Add 'encrypted memory' support, which is a new hardware feature on
upcoming AMD CPUs ('Secure Memory Encryption', SME) allowing system
RAM to be encrypted and decrypted (mostly) transparently by the
CPU, with a little help from the kernel to transition to/from
encrypted RAM. Such RAM should be more secure against various
attacks like RAM access via the memory bus and should make the
radio signature of memory bus traffic harder to intercept (and
decrypt) as well.
This feature is activated via CONFIG_AMD_MEM_ENCRYPT=y - disabled
by default.

We add ability for all cores at NPS SoC to control the number of cycles
HW thread can execute before it is replace with another eligible
HW thread within the same core. The replacement is done by the
HW scheduler.

Reorganize the power management part of admin-guide by adding a
description of major power management strategies supported by the
kernel (system-wide and working-state power management) to it and
dividing the rest of the material into the system-wide PM and
working-state PM chapters.
On top of that, add a description of system sleep states to the
system-wide PM chapter.

If memory is fragmented it is unlikely that large order memory
allocations succeed. This has been an issue with the vmcp device
driver since a long time, since it requires large physical contiguous
memory ares for large responses.
To hopefully resolve this issue make use of the contiguous memory
allocator (cma). This patch adds a vmcp specific vmcp cma area with a
default size of 4MB. The size can be changed either via the
VMCP_CMA_SIZE config option at compile time or with the "vmcp_cma"
kernel parameter (e.g. "vmcp_cma=16m").
For any vmcp response buffers larger than 16k memory from the cma area
will be allocated. If such an allocation fails, there is a fallback to
the buddy allocator.

All systems with a defined ACPI preferred profile that are not
"servers" have been using the load-based P-state selection algorithm
in intel_pstate since 4.12-rc1 (mobile systems and laptops have been
using it since 4.10-rc1) and no problems with it have been reported
to date. In particular, no regressions with respect to the PID-based
P-state selection have been reported. Also testing indicates that
the P-state selection algorithm based on CPU load is generally on par
with the PID-based algorithm performance-wise, and for some workloads
it turns out to be better than the other one, while being more
straightforward and easier to understand at the same time.
Moreover, the PID-based P-state selection algorithm in intel_pstate
is known to be unstable in some situation and generally problematic,
the issues with it are hard to address and it has become a
significant maintenance burden.
For these reasons, make intel_pstate use the "powersave" P-state
selection algorithm based on CPU load in the active mode on all
systems and drop the PID-based P-state selection code along with
all things related to it from the driver. Also update the
documentation accordingly.

If a CPU is specified in the nohz_full= kernel boot parameter to a
kernel built with CONFIG_NO_HZ_FULL=y, then that CPU's callbacks will
be offloaded, just as if that CPU had also been specified in the
rcu_nocbs= kernel boot parameter. But the current documentation
states that the user must keep these two boot parameters manually
synchronized. This commit therefore updates the documentation to
reflect reality.

The cpufreq core and governors aren't supposed to set a limit on how
fast we want to try changing the frequency. This is currently done for
the legacy governors with help of min_sampling_rate.
At worst, we may end up setting the sampling rate to a value lower than
the rate at which frequency can be changed and then one of the CPUs in
the policy will be only changing frequency for ever.
But that is something for the user to decide and there is no need to
have special handling for such cases in the core. Leave it for the user
to figure out.

We've run into problems with running out of dynamicly assign char
device majors particullarly on automated test systems with
all-yes-configs. Roughly 40 dynamic assignments can be made with such
kernels at this time while space is reserved for only 20.
Currently, the kernel only prints a warning when dynamic allocation
overflows the reserved region. And when this happens drivers that have
fixed assignments can randomly fail depending on the order of
initialization of other drivers. Thus, adding a new char device can cause
unexpected failures in completely unrelated parts of the kernel.
This patch solves the problem by extending dynamic major number
allocations down from 511 once the 234-254 region fills up. Fixed
majors already exist above 255 so the infrastructure to support
high number majors is already in place. The patch reserves an
additional 128 major numbers which should hopefully last us a while.
Kernels that don't require more than 20 dynamic majors assigned (which
is pretty typical) should not be affected by this change.

Commit 20b2f52b73 ("numa: add CONFIG_MOVABLE_NODE for
movable-dedicated node") has introduced CONFIG_MOVABLE_NODE without a
good explanation on why it is actually useful.
It makes a lot of sense to make movable node semantic opt in but we
already have that because the feature has to be explicitly enabled on
the kernel command line. A config option on top only makes the
configuration space larger without a good reason. It also adds an
additional ifdefery that pollutes the code.
Just drop the config option and make it de-facto always enabled. This
shouldn't introduce any change to the semantic.

Some hardened environments want to build kernels with slab_nomerge
already set (so that they do not depend on remembering to set the kernel
command line option). This is desired to reduce the risk of kernel heap
overflows being able to overwrite objects from merged caches and changes
the requirements for cache layout control, increasing the difficulty of
these attacks. By keeping caches unmerged, these kinds of exploits can
usually only damage objects in the same cache (though the risk to
metadata exploitation is unchanged).

- Rework suspend-to-idle to allow it to take wakeup events signaled
by the EC into account on ACPI-based platforms in order to properly
support power button wakeup from suspend-to-idle on recent Dell
laptops (Rafael Wysocki).
That includes the core suspend-to-idle code rework, support for
the Low Power S0 _DSM interface, and support for the ACPI INT0002
Virtual GPIO device from Hans de Goede (required for USB keyboard
wakeup from suspend-to-idle to work on some machines).
- Stop trying to export the current CPU frequency via /proc/cpuinfo
on x86 as that is inaccurate and confusing (Len Brown).
- Rework the way in which the current CPU frequency is exported by
the kernel (over the cpufreq sysfs interface) on x86 systems with
the APERF and MPERF registers by always using values read from
these registers, when available, to compute the current frequency
regardless of which cpufreq driver is in use (Len Brown).
- Rework the PCI/ACPI device wakeup infrastructure to remove the
questionable and artificial distinction between "devices that
can wake up the system from sleep states" and "devices that can
generate wakeup signals in the working state" from it, which
allows the code to be simplified quite a bit (Rafael Wysocki).
- Fix the wakeup IRQ framework by making it use SRCU instead of
RCU which doesn't allow sleeping in the read-side critical
sections, but which in turn is expected to be allowed by the
IRQ bus locking infrastructure (Thomas Gleixner).
- Modify some computations in the intel_pstate driver to avoid
rounding errors resulting from them (Srinivas Pandruvada).
- Reduce the overhead of the intel_pstate driver in the HWP
(hardware-managed P-states) mode and when the "performance"
P-state selection algorithm is in use by making it avoid
registering scheduler callbacks in those cases (Len Brown).
- Rework the energy_performance_preference sysfs knob in
intel_pstate by changing the values that correspond to
different symbolic hint names used by it (Len Brown).
- Make it possible to use more than one cpuidle driver at the same

the APERF and MPERF registers by always using values read from
these registers, when available, to compute the current frequency
regardless of which cpufreq driver is in use (Len Brown).
- Rework the PCI/ACPI device wakeup infrastructure to remove the
questionable and artificial distinction between "devices that can
wake up the system from sleep states" and "devices that can
generate wakeup signals in the working state" from it, which allows
the code to be simplified quite a bit (Rafael Wysocki).
- Fix the wakeup IRQ framework by making it use SRCU instead of RCU
which doesn't allow sleeping in the read-side critical sections,
but which in turn is expected to be allowed by the IRQ bus locking

rounding errors resulting from them (Srinivas Pandruvada).
- Reduce the overhead of the intel_pstate driver in the HWP

calculate KHz using APERF/MPERF" modified the way the scaling_cur_freq
cpufreq policy attribute in sysfs is handled on contemporary
Intel-based x86 systems, so update the documentation to reflect
that change.

After commit 82b4e03e01 (intel_pstate: skip scheduler hook when in
"performance" mode) get_target_pstate_use_performance() and
get_target_pstate_use_cpu_load() are never called if scaling_governor
is "performance", so drop the CPUFREQ_POLICY_PERFORMANCE checks from
them as they will never trigger anyway.
Moreover, the documentation needs to be updated to reflect the change
made by the above commit, so do that too.

Two table problems caused the PDF build to fail:
- Evidently multirow cells are not appreciated in table headers,
so remove such from the "CS Rows" table.
- The logging message structure table was incorrectly formatted,
with two "+" instead of "|". The HTML build is forgiving of such
things, but PDF is not.

The builtin "ima_appraise_tcb" policy should require file signatures for
at least a few of the hooks (eg. kernel modules, firmware, and the kexec
kernel image), but changing it would break the existing userspace/kernel
ABI.
This patch defines a new builtin policy named "secure_boot", which
can be specified on the "ima_policy=" boot command line, independently
or in conjunction with the "ima_appraise_tcb" policy, by specifing
ima_policy="appraise_tcb | secure_boot". The new appraisal rules
requiring file signatures will be added prior to the "ima_appraise_tcb"
rules.

Stack guard page is a useful feature to reduce a risk of stack smashing
into a different mapping. We have been using a single page gap which
is sufficient to prevent having stack adjacent to a different mapping.
But this seems to be insufficient in the light of the stack usage in
userspace. E.g. glibc uses as large as 64kB alloca() in many commonly
used functions. Others use constructs liks gid_t buffer[NGROUPS_MAX]
which is 256kB or stack strings with MAX_ARG_STRLEN.
This will become especially dangerous for suid binaries and the default
no limit for the stack size limit because those applications can be
tricked to consume a large portion of the stack and a single glibc call
could jump over the guard page. These attacks are not theoretical,
unfortunatelly.
Make those attacks less probable by increasing the stack guard gap
to 1MB (on systems with 4k pages; but make it depend on the page size
because systems with larger base pages might cap stack allocations in
the PAGE_SIZE units) which should cover larger alloca() and VLA stack
allocations. It is obviously not a full fix because the problem is
somehow inherent, but it should reduce attack space a lot.
One could argue that the gap size should be configurable from userspace,
but that can be done later when somebody finds that the new 1MB is wrong
for some special case applications. For now, add a kernel command line
option (stack_guard_gap) to specify the stack gap size (in page units).
Implementation wise, first delete all the old code for stack guard page:
because although we could get away with accounting one extra page in a
stack vma, accounting a larger gap can break userspace - case in point,
a program run with "ulimit -S -v 20000" failed when the 1MB gap was
counted for RLIMIT_AS; similar problems could come with RLIMIT_MLOCK
and strict non-overcommit mode.
Instead of keeping gap inside the stack vma, maintain the stack guard
gap as a gap between vmas: using vm_start_gap() in place of vm_start
(or vm_end_gap() in place of vm_end if VM_GROWSUP) in just those few
places which need to respect the gap - mainly arch_get_unmapped_area(),
and and the vma tree's subtree_gap support for that.

The RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_PREINIT, RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_PREINIT_DELAY,
RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_PREINIT_DELAY, RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_INIT,
RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_INIT_DELAY, RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_CLEANUP,
and RCU_TORTURE_TEST_SLOW_CLEANUP_DELAY Kconfig options are only
useful for torture testing, and there are the rcutree.gp_cleanup_delay,
rcutree.gp_init_delay, and rcutree.gp_preinit_delay kernel boot parameters
that rcutorture can use instead. The effect of these parameters is to
artificially slow down grace period initialization and cleanup in order
to make some types of race conditions happen more often.
This commit therefore simplifies Tree RCU a bit by removing the Kconfig
options and adding the corresponding kernel parameters to rcutorture's
.boot files instead. However, this commit also leaves out the kernel
parameters for TREE02, TREE04, and TREE07 in order to have about the
same number of tests slowed as not slowed. TREE01, TREE03, TREE05,
and TREE06 are slowed, and the rest are not slowed.

If a given CPU never happens to ever start an SRCU grace period, the
grace-period sequence counter might wrap. If this CPU were to decide to
finally start a grace period, the state of its sdp->srcu_gp_seq_needed
might make it appear that it has already requested this grace period,
which would prevent starting the grace period. If no other CPU ever started
a grace period again, this would look like a grace-period hang. Even
if some other CPU took pity and started the needed grace period, the
leaf rcu_node structure's ->srcu_data_have_cbs field won't have record
of the fact that this CPU has a callback pending, which would look like
a very localized grace-period hang.
This might seem very unlikely, but SRCU grace periods can take less than
a microsecond on small systems, which means that overflow can happen
in much less than an hour on a 32-bit embedded system. And embedded
systems are especially likely to have long-term idle CPUs. Therefore,
it makes sense to prevent this scenario from happening.
This commit therefore scans each srcu_data structure occasionally,
with frequency controlled by the srcutree.counter_wrap_check kernel
boot parameter. This parameter can be set to something like 255
in order to exercise the counter-wrap-prevention code.

This commit adds a writer_holdoff boot parameter to rcuperf, which is
intended to be used to test Tree SRCU's auto-expediting. This
boot parameter is in microseconds, and defaults to zero (that is,
disabled). Set it to a bit larger than srcutree.exp_holdoff,
keeping the nanosecond/microsecond conversion, to force Tree SRCU
to auto-expedite more aggressively.
This commit also adds documentation for this parameter, and fixes some
alphabetization while in the neighborhood.

This commit upgrades rcuperf so that it can do performance testing on
asynchronous grace-period primitives such as call_srcu(). There is
a new rcuperf.gp_async module parameter that specifies this new behavior,
with the pre-existing rcuperf.gp_exp testing expedited grace periods such as
synchronize_rcu_expedited, and with the default being to test synchronous
non-expedited grace periods such as synchronize_rcu().
There is also a new rcuperf.gp_async_max module parameter that specifies
the maximum number of outstanding callbacks per writer kthread, defaulting
to 1,000. When this limit is exceeded, the writer thread invokes the
appropriate flavor of rcu_barrier() to wait for callbacks to drain.

Provide a dt_cpu_ftrs= cmdline option to disable the dt_cpu_ftrs CPU
feature discovery, and fall back to the "cputable" based version.

... 'memmap=' was changed to adopt multiple, comma delimited values in a
single entry, so update the related description.
In the special case of only specifying size value without an offset,
like memmap=nn[KMG], memmap behaves similarly to mem=nn[KMG], so update
it too here.
Furthermore, for memmap=nn[KMG]$ss[KMG], an escape character needs be added
before '$' for some bootloaders. E.g in grub2, if we specify memmap=100M$5G
as suggested by the documentation, "memmap=100MG" gets passed to the kernel.
Clarify all this.

Vhost-vsock is a software device so there is no probe call that causes
the driver to register its misc char device node. This creates a
chicken and egg problem: userspace applications must open
/dev/vhost-vsock to use the driver but the file doesn't exist until the
kernel module has been loaded.
Use the devname modalias mechanism so that /dev/vhost-vsock is created
at boot. The vhost_vsock kernel module is automatically loaded when the
first application opens /dev/host-vsock.
Note that the "reserved for local use" range in
Documentation/admin-guide/devices.txt is incorrect. The userio driver
already occupies part of that range. I've updated the documentation
accordingly.

On small systems, in the absence of readers, expedited SRCU grace
periods can complete in less than a microsecond. This means that an
eight-CPU system can have all CPUs doing synchronize_srcu() in a tight
loop and almost always expedite. This might actually be desirable in
some situations, but in general it is a good way to needlessly burn
CPU cycles. And in those situations where it is desirable, your friend
is the function synchronize_srcu_expedited().
For other situations, this commit adds a kernel parameter that specifies
a holdoff between completing the last SRCU grace period and auto-expediting
the next. If the next grace period starts before the holdoff expires,
auto-expediting is disabled. The holdoff is 50 microseconds by default,
and can be tuned to the desired number of nanoseconds. A value of zero
disables auto-expediting.

IOMMU harms performance signficantly when we run very fast networking
workloads. It's 40GB networking doing XDP test. Software overhead is
almost unaware, but it's the IOTLB miss (based on our analysis) which
kills the performance. We observed the same performance issue even with
software passthrough (identity mapping), only the hardware passthrough
survives. The pps with iommu (with software passthrough) is only about
~30% of that without it. This is a limitation in hardware based on our
observation, so we'd like to disable the IOMMU force on, but we do want
to use TBOOT and we can sacrifice the DMA security bought by IOMMU. I
must admit I know nothing about TBOOT, but TBOOT guys (cc-ed) think not
eabling IOMMU is totally ok.
So introduce a new boot option to disable the force on. It's kind of
silly we need to run into intel_iommu_init even without force on, but we
need to disable TBOOT PMR registers. For system without the boot option,
nothing is changed.

when the document was converted to reStructuredText. Re-flow the
paragraphs and make the document references proper reStructuredText
:ref: links.
This also adds the appropriate reStructuredText file heading to

The IOMMU core currently initialises the default domain for each group
to IOMMU_DOMAIN_DMA, under the assumption that devices will use
IOMMU-backed DMA ops by default. However, in some cases it is desirable
for the DMA ops to bypass the IOMMU for performance reasons, reserving
use of translation for subsystems such as VFIO that require it for
enforcing device isolation.
Rather than modify each IOMMU driver to provide different semantics for
DMA domains, instead we introduce a command line parameter that can be
used to change the type of the default domain. Passthrough can then be
specified using "iommu.passthrough=1" on the kernel command line.

Disable kasan after the first report. There are several reasons for
this:
- Single bug quite often has multiple invalid memory accesses causing
storm in the dmesg.
- Write OOB access might corrupt metadata so the next report will print
bogus alloc/free stacktraces.
- Reports after the first easily could be not bugs by itself but just
side effects of the first one.
Given that multiple reports usually only do harm, it makes sense to
disable kasan after the first one. If user wants to see all the
reports, the boot-time parameter kasan_multi_shot must be used.

Introduce a simple data structure for collecting correctable errors
along with accessors. More detailed description in the code itself.
The error decoding is done with the decoding chain now and
mce_first_notifier() gets to see the error first and the CEC decides
whether to log it and then the rest of the chain doesn't hear about it -
basically the main reason for the CE collector - or to continue running
the notifiers.
When the CEC hits the action threshold, it will try to soft-offine the
page containing the ECC and then the whole decoding chain gets to see
the error.

Add support for earlyprintk by writing debug messages to the
USB3 debug port. Users can use this type of early printk by
specifying the kernel parameter of "earlyprintk=xdbc". This
gives users a chance of providing debugging output.
The hardware for USB3 debug port requires DMA memory blocks.
This requires to delay setting up debugging hardware and
registering boot console until the memblocks are filled.

Add 'consistency_policy' attribute for array. It indicates how the array
maintains consistency in case of unexpected shutdown.
Add 'ppl_sector' and 'ppl_size' for rdev, which describe the location
and size of the PPL space on the device. They can't be changed for
active members if the array is started and PPL is enabled, so in the
setter functions only basic checks are performed. More checks are done
in ppl_validate_rdev() when starting the log.
These attributes are writable to allow enabling PPL for external
metadata arrays and (later) to enable/disable PPL for a running array.

The user/admin documentation of cpufreq is badly outdated. It
conains stale and/or inaccurate information along with things
that are not particularly useful. Also, some of the important
pieces are missing from it.
For this reason, add a new user/admin document for cpufreq
containing current information to admin-guide and drop the old
outdated .txt documents it is replacing.
Since there will be more PM documents in admin-guide going forward,
create a separate directory for them and put the cpufreq document
in there right away.

in initialization. A check was added to make sure that all jump label
entries were 4 bytes aligned, but powerpc didn't work that way for modules.
Adding an alignment in the module linker script appeared to be the best
solution.
Jump labels also added an anonymous union to access those LSB bits as a
normal long. But because this structure had static initialization, it broke
older compilers that could not statically initialize anonymous unions
without brackets.
The command line parameter for setting function graph filter broke the
"EMPTY_HASH" descriptor by modifying it instead of creating a new hash to
hold the entries.
The command line parameter ftrace_graph_max_depth was added to allow its
setting at boot time. It uses existing code and only the command line hook
was added. This is not really a fix, but as it uses existing code without
affecting anything else, I added it to this release. It was ready before the

"There was some breakage with the changes for jump labels in the 4.11
merge window:
- powerpc broke as jump labels uses the two LSB bits as flags in
initialization.
A check was added to make sure that all jump label entries were 4
bytes aligned, but powerpc didn't work that way for modules. Adding
an alignment in the module linker script appeared to be the best
solution.
- Jump labels also added an anonymous union to access those LSB bits
as a normal long. But because this structure had static
initialization, it broke older compilers that could not statically
initialize anonymous unions without brackets.
- The command line parameter for setting function graph filter broke
the "EMPTY_HASH" descriptor by modifying it instead of creating a
new hash to hold the entries.
- The command line parameter ftrace_graph_max_depth was added to
allow its setting at boot time. It uses existing code and only the
command line hook was added.
This is not really a fix, but as it uses existing code without
affecting anything else, I added it to this release. It was ready
before the merge window closed, but I wanted to let it sit in
linux-next for a couple of days first"

For mouse devices we can currently change the polling interval
via usbhid.mousepoll. Implement the same thing for joysticks, so
users can reduce input latency this way.
This has been tested with a Logitech RumblePad 2 with jspoll=2,
resulting in a polling rate of 500Hz (verified with evhz).

Add the "cpufreq.off=1" cmdline option.
At boot-time, this allows a user to request CONFIG_CPU_FREQ=n
behavior from a kernel built with CONFIG_CPU_FREQ=y.
This is analogous to the existing "cpuidle.off=1" option
and CONFIG_CPU_IDLE=y
This capability is valuable when we need to debug end-user
issues in the BIOS or in Linux. It is also convenient
for enabling comparisons, which may otherwise require a new kernel,
or help from BIOS SETUP, which may be buggy or unavailable.

Early trace callgraphs can be extremely large on systems with
several seconds of boot time. The max_depth parameter limits how
deep the graph trace goes and reduces the output size. This
parameter is the same as the max_graph_depth file in tracefs.

SLUB creates a per-cache directory under /sys/kernel/slab which hosts a
bunch of debug files. Usually, there aren't that many caches on a
system and this doesn't really matter; however, if memcg is in use, each
cache can have per-cgroup sub-caches. SLUB creates the same directories
for these sub-caches under /sys/kernel/slab/$CACHE/cgroup.
Unfortunately, because there can be a lot of cgroups, active or
draining, the product of the numbers of caches, cgroups and files in
each directory can reach a very high number - hundreds of thousands is
commonplace. Millions and beyond aren't difficult to reach either.
What's under /sys/kernel/slab is primarily for debugging and the
information and control on the a root cache already cover its
sub-caches. While having a separate directory for each sub-cache can be
helpful for development, it doesn't make much sense to pay this amount
of overhead by default.
This patch introduces a boot parameter slub_memcg_sysfs which determines
whether to create sysfs directories for per-memcg sub-caches. It also
adds CONFIG_SLUB_MEMCG_SYSFS_ON which determines the boot parameter's
default value and defaults to 0.

Here is the big tty/serial driver patchset for 4.11-rc1.
Not much here, but a lot of little fixes and individual serial driver
updates all over the subsystem. Majority are for the sh-sci driver and
platform (the arch-specific changes have acks from the maintainer).
The start of the "serial bus" code is here as well, but nothing is
converted to use it yet. That work is still ongoing, hopefully will
start to show up across different subsystems for 4.12 (bluetooth is one
major place that will be used.)
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
issues.

The goldfish platform code registers the platform device unconditionally
which causes havoc in several ways if the goldfish_pdev_bus driver is
enabled:
- Access to the hardcoded physical memory region, which is either not
available or contains stuff which is completely unrelated.
- Prevents that the interrupt of the serial port can be requested
- In case of a spurious interrupt it goes into a infinite loop in the
interrupt handler of the pdev_bus driver (which needs to be fixed
seperately).
Add a 'goldfish' command line option to make the registration opt-in when
the platform is compiled in.
I'm seriously grumpy about this engineering trainwreck, which has seven
SOBs from Intel developers for 50 lines of code. And none of them figured
out that this is broken. Impressive fail!

Having a command line option to flip the errata handling for a
particular erratum is a little bit unusual, and it's vastly superior to
pass this in the DT. By common consensus, it's best to kill off the

The old csrowX sysfs directories have per-csrow error counters, but the
new dimmX directories do not currently expose error counts.
EDAC already keeps these counts, add them to sysfs so per-DIMM counts
are still available when CONFIG_EDAC_LEGACY_SYSFS=n.

Use the early sclp code to provide a boot console. This boot console
is available if the kernel parameter "earlyprintk" has been specified,
just like it works for other architectures that also provide an early
boot console.
This makes debugging of early problems much easier, since now we
finally have working console output even before memory detection is
running.
The boot console will be automatically disabled as soon as another
console will be registered.

This allows enabling earlycon for devices with a Lantiq serial console
by splitting lqasc_serial_port_write() from lqasc_console_write() and
re-using the new function for earlycon's write callback.
The kernel-parameter name matches the driver name ("lantiq"), similar
to how other drivers implement this.

Sometimes, the users may require a quirk to be provided from ACPI subsystem
core to prevent a GPE from flooding.
Normally, if a GPE cannot be dispatched, ACPICA core automatically prevents
the GPE from firing. But there are cases the GPE is dispatched by _Lxx/_Exx
provided via AML table, and OSPM is lacking of the knowledge to get
_Lxx/_Exx correctly executed to handle the GPE, thus the GPE flooding may
still occur.
The existing quirk mechanism can be enabled/disabled using the following
commands to prevent such kind of GPE flooding during runtime:
# echo mask > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe00
# echo unmask > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe00
To avoid GPE flooding during boot, we need a boot stage mechanism.
This patch provides such a boot stage quirk mechanism to stop this kind of
GPE flooding. This patch doesn't fix any feature gap but since the new
feature gaps could be found in the future endlessly, and can disappear if
the feature gaps are filled, providing a boot parameter rather than a DMI
table should suffice.

The IMA binary_runtime_measurements list is currently in platform native
format.
To allow restoring a measurement list carried across kexec with a
different endianness than the targeted kernel, this patch defines
little-endian as the canonical format. For big endian systems wanting
to save/restore the measurement list from a system with a different
endianness, a new boot command line parameter named "ima_canonical_fmt"
is defined.
Considerations: use of the "ima_canonical_fmt" boot command line option
will break existing userspace applications on big endian systems
expecting the binary_runtime_measurements list to be in platform native
format.

On architectures like arm64, swiotlb is tied intimately to the core
architecture DMA support. In addition, ZONE_DMA cannot be disabled.
To aid debugging and catch devices not supporting DMA to memory outside
the 32-bit address space, add a kernel command line option
"swiotlb=noforce", which disables the use of bounce buffers.
If specified, trying to map memory that cannot be used with DMA will
fail, and a rate-limited warning will be printed.
Note that io_tlb_nslabs is set to 1, which is the minimal supported
value.

In addition to that, the system sleep state selection interface is
modified to make it easier for distributions with unchanged user space
to support suspend-to-idle as the default system suspend method, some
issues are fixed in the PM core, the latency tolerance PM QoS
framework is improved a bit, the Intel RAPL power capping driver is

The creation of the admin and process guides is a great thing, but, without
care, we risk replacing a messy docs directory with a few messy Sphinx
books. In an attempt to head that off and show what I'm thinking, here's a
set of tweaks that, I think, make the existing Sphinx-formatted docs a bit
more accessible.
The document has not been touched in over 11 years and doesn't reflect how
profiling is done in the perf era.

The admin guide is a good start, but it's time to turn it into something
better than an unordered blob of files. This is a first step in that
direction. The TOC has been split up and annotated, the guides have been
reordered, and minor tweaks have been applied to a few of them.
One consequence of splitting up the TOC is that we don't really want to use
:numbered: anymore, since the count resets every time and there doesn't
seem to be a way to change that. Eventually we probably want to group the
documents into sub-books, at which point we can go back to a single TOC,
but it's probably early to do that.
