f2db633d30 alpha: Use new generic strncpy_from_user() and strnlen_user()
Similar to x86/sparc/powerpc implementations except:
1) we implement an extremely efficient has_zero()/find_zero()
   sequence with both prep_zero_mask() and create_zero_mask()
   no-operations.
2) Our output from prep_zero_mask() differs in that only the
   lowest eight bits are used to represent the zero bytes
   nevertheless it can be safely ORed with other similar masks
   from prep_zero_mask() and forms input to create_zero_mask(),
   the two fundamental properties prep_zero_mask() must satisfy.

Tests on EV67 and EV68 CPUs revealed that the generic code is
essentially as fast (to within 0.5% of CPU cycles) of the old
Alpha specific code for large quadword-aligned strings, despite
the 30% extra CPU instructions executed.  In contrast, the
generic code for unaligned strings is substantially slower (by
more than a factor of 3) than the old Alpha specific code.

c1d7e01d78 ipc: use Kconfig options for __ARCH_WANT_[COMPAT_]IPC_PARSE_VERSION
Rather than #define the options manually in the architecture code, add
Kconfig options for them and select them there instead.  This also allows
us to select the compat IPC version parsing automatically for platforms
using the old compat IPC interface.

f2971c4c31 alpha: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP
alpha copied pci_iomap from generic code to avoid
pulling the rest of iomap.c in.  Since that's in
a separate file now, we can reuse the common implementation.

The only difference is handling of nocache flag,
that turns out to be done correctly by the
generic code since arch/alpha/include/asm/io.h
defines ioremap_nocache same as ioremap.

instead of all architectures. This will be helpful
for the follow-up patch which makes it select
other configs. Code is also a bit shorter this way.

df013ffb81 Add Kconfig option ARCH_HAVE_NMI_SAFE_CMPXCHG
cmpxchg() is widely used by lockless code, including NMI-safe lockless
code.  But on some architectures, the cmpxchg() implementation is not
NMI-safe, on these architectures the lockless code may need a
spin_trylock_irqsave() based implementation.

This patch adds a Kconfig option: ARCH_HAVE_NMI_SAFE_CMPXCHG, so that
NMI-safe lockless code can depend on it or provide different
implementation according to it.

On many architectures, cmpxchg is only NMI-safe for several specific
operand sizes. So, ARCH_HAVE_NMI_SAFE_CMPXCHG define in this patch
only guarantees cmpxchg is NMI-safe for sizeof(unsigned long).

a6e120ed42 alpha: Use generic show_interrupts()
The only subtle difference is that alpha uses ACTUAL_NR_IRQS and
prints the IRQF_DISABLED flag.

Change the generic implementation to deal with ACTUAL_NR_IRQS if
defined.

The IRQF_DISABLED printing is pointless, as we nowadays run all
interrupts with irqs disabled.

e360adbe29 irq_work: Add generic hardirq context callbacks
Provide a mechanism that allows running code in IRQ context. It is
most useful for NMI code that needs to interact with the rest of the
system -- like wakeup a task to drain buffers.

Perf currently has such a mechanism, so extract that and provide it as
a generic feature, independent of perf so that others may also
benefit.

The IRQ context callback is generated through self-IPIs where
possible, or on architectures like powerpc the decrementer (the
built-in timer facility) is set to generate an interrupt immediately.

Architectures that don't have anything like this get to do with a
callback from the timer tick. These architectures can call
irq_work_run() at the tail of any IRQ handlers that might enqueue such
work (like the perf IRQ handler) to avoid undue latencies in
processing the work.

9ce34c8f44 Convert alpha to use clocksources instead of arch_gettimeoffset
Alpha has a tsc like rpcc counter that it uses to manage time.
This can be converted to an actual clocksource instead of utilizing
the arch_gettimeoffset method that is really only there for legacy
systems with no continuous counter.

Further cleanups could be made if alpha converted to the clockevent
model.

1e871be1aa alpha: Convert alpha to use read/update_persistent_clock
This patch converts the alpha architecture to use the generic
read_persistent_clock and update_persistent_clock interfaces, reducing
the amount of arch specific code we have to maintain, and allowing for
further cleanups in the future.

I have not built or tested this patch, so help from arch maintainers
would be appreciated.

c186caca3d dma-mapping: alpha: use include/linux/pci-dma-compat.h
This converts Alpha to use include/linux/pci-dma-compat.h.  Alpha is the
only architecutre that implements the PCI DMA API in the own way.  That
makes it difficult to implement the generic DMA API via the PCI bus
specific DMA API.

The generic DMA API calls the PCI DMA API implementation in
arch/alpha/kernel/pci_iommu.c on non Jensen systems.  It calls the DMA API
in arch/alpha/kernel/pci-noop.c on Jensen systems.

4f543fa41e alpha: convert to use arch_gettimeoffset()
Converts alpha to use GENERIC_TIME via the arch_getoffset()
infrastructure, reducing the amount of arch specific code we need to
maintain.

I suspect the alpha arch could even be further improved to provide and
rpcc() based clocksource, but not having the hardware, I don't feel
comfortable attempting the more complicated conversion (but I'd be glad to
help if anyone else is interested).

dc52ddc0e6 container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystem
This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups
framework.  It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in
a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem.

The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named
freezer.state.  Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks
in the cgroup.  Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in
the cgroup.  Reading will return the current state.

* Examples of usage :

   # mkdir /containers/freezer
   # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer  /containers
   # mkdir /containers/0
   # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks

to get status of the freezer subsystem :

   # cat /containers/0/freezer.state
   RUNNING

to freeze all tasks in the container :

   # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state
   # cat /containers/0/freezer.state
   FREEZING
   # cat /containers/0/freezer.state
   FROZEN

to unfreeze all tasks in the container :

   # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state
   # cat /containers/0/freezer.state
   RUNNING

This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space
task in a simple scenario.

It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete.  In that case we
return EBUSY.  This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing
something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this
time.  After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected
by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read.  The state will remain
"FREEZING" until one of these things happens:

	1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to
		the freezer.state file
	2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to
		the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal
		and returns EIO)
	3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN"
		state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks.

e17c6d5616 Introduce HAVE_AOUT symbol to remove hard-coded arch list for BINFMT_AOUT
HAVE_AOUT doesn't quite do the same thing as the recently removed
ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT config option. That was set even on platforms where
binfmt_aout isn't supported, although it's not entirely clear why.

So it's best just to introduce a new symbol, handled consistently with
other similar HAVE_xxx symbols; with a simple 'select' in the arch Kconfig.

bdc807871d avoid overflows in kernel/time.c
When the conversion factor between jiffies and milli- or microseconds is
not a single multiply or divide, as for the case of HZ == 300, we currently
do a multiply followed by a divide.  The intervening result, however, is
subject to overflows, especially since the fraction is not simplified (for
HZ == 300, we multiply by 300 and divide by 1000).

This is exposed to the user when passing a large timeout to poll(), for
example.

This patch replaces the multiply-divide with a reciprocal multiplication on
32-bit platforms.  When the input is an unsigned long, there is no portable
way to do this on 64-bit platforms there is no portable way to do this
since it requires a 128-bit intermediate result (which gcc does support on
64-bit platforms but may generate libgcc calls, e.g.  on 64-bit s390), but
since the output is a 32-bit integer in the cases affected, just simplify
the multiply-divide (*3/10 instead of *300/1000).

The reciprocal multiply used can have off-by-one errors in the upper half
of the valid output range.  This could be avoided at the expense of having
to deal with a potential 65-bit intermediate result.  Since the intent is
to avoid overflow problems and most of the other time conversions are only
semiexact, the off-by-one errors were considered an acceptable tradeoff.

At Ralf Baechle's suggestion, this version uses a Perl script to compute
the necessary constants.  We already have dependencies on Perl for kernel
compiles.  This does, however, require the Perl module Math::BigInt, which
is included in the standard Perl distribution starting with version 5.8.0.
In order to support older versions of Perl, include a table of canned
constants in the script itself, and structure the script so that
Math::BigInt isn't required if pulling values from said table.

Running the script requires that the HZ value is available from the
Makefile.  Thus, this patch also adds the Kconfig variable CONFIG_HZ to the
architectures which didn't already have it (alpha, cris, frv, h8300, m32r,
m68k, m68knommu, sparc, v850, and xtensa.) It does *not* touch the sh or
sh64 architectures, since Paul Mundt has dealt with those separately in the
sh tree.

Mark arches that support A.OUT format by including the following in their
master Kconfig files:

	config ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT
		def_bool y

This should also be set if the arch provides compatibility A.OUT support for
an older arch, for instance x86_64 for i386 or sparc64 for sparc.

I've guessed at which arches don't, based on comments in the code, however I'm
sure that some of the ones I've marked as 'yes' actually should be 'no'.
