There are two issues here, one is that the device is generating
spurious very fast modem status line changes somewhere:
CTS becomes high then low 18µs later:
[121226.924373] ftdi_process_packet: prev rng=0 dsr=10 dcd=0 cts=6
[121226.924378] ftdi_process_packet: status=10 prev=00 diff=10
[121226.924382] ftdi_process_packet: now rng=0 dsr=10 dcd=0 cts=7
(wake_up_interruptible is called)
[121226.924391] ftdi_process_packet: prev rng=0 dsr=10 dcd=0 cts=7
[121226.924394] ftdi_process_packet: status=00 prev=10 diff=10
[121226.924397] ftdi_process_packet: now rng=0 dsr=10 dcd=0 cts=8
(wake_up_interruptible is called)
This wakes up the task in TIOCMIWAIT:
[121226.924405] ftdi_ioctl: 19451 rng=0->0 dsr=10->10 dcd=0->0 cts=6->8
(wait from 20:51:46 returns and observes both changes)
Which then calls TIOCMIWAIT again:
20:51:46.400239 ioctl(3, TIOCMIWAIT, 0x20) = 0
22:11:09.441818 ioctl(3, TIOCMGET, [TIOCM_DTR|TIOCM_RTS]) = 0
22:11:09.442812 ioctl(3, TIOCMIWAIT, 0x20) = -1 EIO (Input/output error)
(the second wake_up_interruptible takes effect and an I/O error occurs)
The other issue is that TIOCMIWAIT will wait forever (unless the task is
interrupted) if the device is removed.
This change removes the -EIO return that occurs if the counts don't
appear to have changed. Multiple counts may have been processed as
one or the waiting task may have started waiting after recording the
current count.
It adds a bool to indicate that the device has been removed so that
TIOCMIWAIT doesn't wait forever, and wakes up any tasks so that they can
return -EIO.

Handling of TIOCMIWAIT was changed by commit 1d749f9afa
USB: ftdi_sio.c: Use ftdi async_icount structure for TIOCMIWAIT, as in other drivers
FTDI_STATUS_B0_MASK does not indicate the changed modem status lines,
it indicates the value of the current modem status lines. An xor is
still required to determine which lines have changed.
The count was only being incremented if the line was high. The only
reason TIOCMIWAIT still worked was because the status packet is
repeated every 1ms, so the count was always changing. The wakeup
itself still ran based on the status lines changing.
This change fixes handling of updates to the modem status lines and
allows multiple processes to use TIOCMIWAIT concurrently.
Tested with two processes waiting on different status lines being
toggled independently.

This patch (as1536) fixes a bug in the USB serial core. Unloading and
reloading a serial driver while a serial device is plugged in causes
errors because of the code in usb_serial_disconnect() that tries to
make sure the port_remove method is called. With the new order of
driver registration introduced in the 3.4 kernel, this is definitely
not the right thing to do (if indeed it ever was).
The patch removes that whole section code, along with the mechanism
for keeping track of each port's registration state, which is no
longer needed. The driver core can handle all that stuff for us.
Note: This has been tested only with one or two USB serial drivers.
In theory, other drivers might still run into trouble. But if they
do, it will be the fault of the drivers, not of this patch -- that is,
the drivers will need to be fixed.

This patch updates the cp210x driver to support CP210x multiple
interface devices devices from Silicon Labs. The existing driver
always sends control requests to interface 0, which is hardcoded in
the usb_control_msg function calls. This only allows for single
interface devices to be used, and causes a bug when using ports on an
interface other than 0 in the multiple interface devices.
Here are the changes included in this patch:
- Updated the device list to contain the Silicon Labs factory default
VID/PID for multiple interface CP210x devices
- Created a cp210x_port_private struct created for each port on
startup, this struct holds the interface number
- Added a cp210x_release function to clean up the cp210x_port_private
memory created on startup
- Modified usb_get_config and usb_set_config to get a pointer to the
cp210x_port_private struct, and use the interface number there in the
usb_control_message wIndex param

Now that Alan Stern has cleaned up the usb serial driver registration,
we have the ability to create a module_usb_serial_driver macro to make
things a bit simpler, like the other *_driver macros created.
But, as we need two functions here, we can't reuse the existing
module_driver() macro, so we need to roll our own.
Here's a patch implementing module_usb_serial_driver() and it converts
the pl2303 driver to use it, showing a nice cleanup.

Gobi 1000 devices have a different port layout, which wasn't respected
by the current driver, and thus it grabbed the QMI/net port. In the
near future we'll be attaching another driver to the QMI/net port for
these devices (cdc-wdm and qmi_wwan) so make sure the qcserial driver
doesn't claim them. This patch also prevents qcserial from binding to
interfaces 0 and 1 on 1K devices because those interfaces do not

This patch (as1522) adds two new routines to the usb-serial core, for
registering and unregistering serial drivers. Instead of registering
the usb_driver and usb_serial_drivers separately, with error checking
for each one, the drivers can all be registered and unregistered by a
single function call. This reduces duplicated code.
More importantly, the new core routines change the order in which the
drivers are registered. Currently the usb-serial drivers are all
registered first and the usb_driver is done last, which leaves a
window for problems. A udev script may quickly add a new dynamic-ID
for a usb-serial driver, causing the corresponding usb_driver to be
probed. If the usb_driver hasn't been registered yet then an oops
will occur.
The new routine prevents such problems by registering the usb_driver
first. To insure that it gets probed properly for already-attached
serial devices, we call driver_attach() after all the usb-serial
drivers have been registered.
Along with adding the new routines, the patch modifies the "generic"
serial driver to use them. Further patches will similarly modify all
the other in-tree USB serial drivers.

This fix changes the way baudrates are set on the CP210x devices from
Silicon Labs. The CP2101/2/3 will respond to both a GET/SET_BAUDDIV
command, and GET/SET_BAUDRATE command, while CP2104 and higher devices
only respond to GET/SET_BAUDRATE. The current cp210x.ko driver in
kernel version 3.2.0 only implements the GET/SET_BAUDDIV command.
This patch implements the two new codes for the GET/SET_BAUDRATE
commands. Then there is a change in the way that the baudrate is
assigned or retrieved. This is done according to the CP210x USB
specification in AN571. This document can be found here:
http://www.silabs.com/pages/DownloadDoc.aspx?FILEURL=Support%20Documents/TechnicalDocs/AN571.pdf&src=DocumentationWebPart
Sections 5.3/5.4 describe the USB packets for the old baudrate method.
Sections 5.5/5.6 describe the USB packets for the new method. This
patch also implements the new request scheme, and eliminates the
unnecessary baudrate calculations since it uses the "actual baudrate"
method.
This patch solves the problem reported for the CP2104 in bug 42586,
and also keeps support for all other devices (CP2101/2/3).
This patchfile is also attached to the bug report on
bugzilla.kernel.org. This patch has been developed and test on the
3.2.0 mainline kernel version under Ubuntu 10.11.

Add support for Chinese Noname HSPA USB modem which is apparently
manufactured by a company called ZD Incorporated (based on texts in the
Windows drivers).
This product is available at least from Dealextreme (SKU 80032) and
possibly in India with name Olive V-MW250. It is based on Qualcomm
MSM6280 chip.
I needed to also add "options usb-storage quirks=0685:7000:i" in modprobe
configuration because udevd or the kernel keeps poking the embedded
fake-cd-rom which fails and causes the device to reset. There might be
a better way to accomplish the same. usb_modeswitch is not needed with
this device.

Huawei use the product code HUAWEI_PRODUCT_E353 (0x1506) for a
number of different devices, which each can appear with a number
of different descriptor sets. Different types of interfaces
can be identified by looking at the subclass and protocol fields
Subclass 1 protocol 8 is actually the data interface of a CDC
ECM set, with subclass 1 protocol 9 as the control interface.
Neither support serial data communcation, and cannot therefore
be supported by this driver.
At the same time, add a few other sets which appear if the
device is configured in "Windows mode" using this modeswitch

Fix for ftdi_set_termios() glitching output
ftdi_set_termios() is constantly setting the baud rate, data bits and parity
unnecessarily on every call, . When called while characters are being
transmitted can cause the FTDI chip to corrupt the serial port bit stream
output by stalling the output half a bit during the output of a character.
Simple fix by skipping this setting if the baud rate/data bits/parity are
unchanged.

I had a brief run with strace on the getty and it was doing ioctl()s on
each call but it didn't look relavant to the problem. I think the issue is
that XON/XOFF flow control was being implmented via hardware - for the ixoff
to allow the user to use XON/XOFF to control output. Unfortunately it would
send 3 Control URBs updating all of the settings after each piece of input
I am trying to work around the issue of gmail messing with the tab/spacing
by submitting via SMTP via gmail which I believe should fix the issue.
The patch is against v3.2-rc2 and compiles - but no additional testing in
this kernel has been done.
Thanks

Use usb_translate_errors() to map USB-specific errors to errors
appropriate for user space (ENOMEM, ENODEV and EIO) in write.
Currently almost all serial drivers simply forward error codes from the
stack (e.g. from usb_submit_urb()), but these codes often have
different meanings in user-space. Doing the mapping in usb-serial core
simplifies driver code and allows for more consistent error reporting.

the recent addition of the FT232H showed that baudrate was set wrong. See
gmane.linux.usb.general: "[ftdi_sio] FT232H support". With the old code,
the MSB of the 4 encoded fractional divider bits and more important the
clock predivider bits got lost. Adding the FT232H to the code patch were
these bits are shifted solves the problem. I verified baud rates with a
scope now.
I suspect, that the BM device probably needs these bits shifted too. But
there is no predivider bit, so this is not obvious, and a missing MSB of the
encoded fractional divider only shifts the resulting baudrate minimal.
The AM has only 3 bits of encoded fractional divider, so it is not impacted.
I have no BM device to test, so I only added a comment and left the code for

appended patch adds support for the new FTDI FT232H chip. This chip is a
single channel version of the dual FT2232H/quad FT4232H, coming with it's
own default PID 0x6014 (FT2232H uses the same PID 0x6010 like FT2232C,
FT4232H has also it's own PID).
The patch was checked on an UM232H module and a terminal program with TX/RX
shorted to that typing in the terminal reproduced the characters.

when the option driver tries to bind to it.
So revert this as it doesn't seem to be needed at all.

The funtion option_send_status times out when sending USB messages
to the interfaces 0, 1, and 2 of this UMTS stick. This results in a
5s timeout in the function causing other tty operations to feel very
sluggish.
This patch adds a blacklist entry for these 3 interfaces on the ZTE
K3765-Z device.
I was also able to reproduce the problem with v2.6.38 and v2.6.39.
This is very similar to a problem fixed in

This modem really wants sendsetup blacklisted for interfaces 0 and 1,
otherwise the kernel hardlocks for about 10 seconds while waiting for
the modem's firmware to respond, which it of course doesn't do.
A slight complication here is that TCT (who owns the Alcatel brand) used
the same USB IDs for the X200 as the X060s despite the devices having
completely different firmware and AT command sets, so we end up adding
the X060s to the blacklist at the same time. PSA to OEMs: don't use the
same USB IDs for different devices. Really. It makes your kittens cry.

I am sharing patch to the devices/usb/serial/option.c. This allows
operation of Huawei E353 broadband modem using the “option” driver. The
patch simply adds new constant with proper product ID and an entry to
usb_device_id. I worked on the 2.6.38.6 sources. Tested on Dell inspiron
1764 (i3 core cpu) and brand new Huawei E353 modem, Fedora 15 beta.
Looking at the type of change, i doubt it has potential to introduce
problems in other parts of kernel or the driver itself.

This reverts commit 90593899de.
SAM-BA devices identify themselves CDC-ACM devices and should be using
the cdc-acm driver.
Since commit 5b239f0aeb (USB: cdc-acm: Add pseudo
modem without AT command capabilities) cdc-acm also binds to them.
Note that the Atmel SAM-BA tools expect to use a USB-serial driver and thus
require a symlink from /dev/ttyACMn to some /dev/ttyUSBm (with m < 30) to be
able to select the device. This is simply a UI-issue that should be
fixed by Atmel.
Tested with the SAM-BA 2.10 tools and an Atmel at91sam9260-ek.
