mm/memfd: add documentation for MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL MFD_EXEC
When MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL was introduced, there was one big mistake: it didn't have proper documentation. This led to a lot of confusion, especially about whether or not memfd created with the MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL flag is sealable. Before MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL, memfd had to explicitly set MFD_ALLOW_SEALING to be sealable, so it's a fair question. As one might have noticed, unlike other flags in memfd_create, MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL is actually a combination of multiple flags. The idea is to make it easier to use memfd in the most common way, which is NOEXEC + F_SEAL_EXEC + MFD_ALLOW_SEALING. This works with sysctl vm.noexec to help existing applications move to a more secure way of using memfd. Proposals have been made to put MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL non-sealable, unless MFD_ALLOW_SEALING is set, to be consistent with other flags [1], Those are based on the viewpoint that each flag is an atomic unit, which is a reasonable assumption. However, MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL was designed with the intent of promoting the most secure method of using memfd, therefore a combination of multiple functionalities into one bit. Furthermore, the MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL has been added for more than one year, and multiple applications and distributions have backported and utilized it. Altering ABI now presents a degree of risk and may lead to disruption. MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL is a new flag, and applications must change their code to use it. There is no backward compatibility problem. When sysctl vm.noexec == 1 or 2, applications that don't set MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL or MFD_EXEC will get MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL memfd. And old-application might break, that is by-design, in such a system vm.noexec = 0 shall be used. Also no backward compatibility problem. I propose to include this documentation patch to assist in clarifying the semantics of MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL, thereby preventing any potential future confusion. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to David Rheinsberg and Barnabás Pőcze for initiating the discussion on the topic of sealability. docs: gpio: prefer pread(2) for interrupt reading
In legacy sysfs GPIO, when using poll(2) on the sysfs GPIO value for state change awaiting, a subsequent read(2) is required for consuming the event, which the doc recommends the use of lseek(2) or close-and-reopen to reset the file offset afterwards. The recommendations however, require at least 2 syscalls to consume the event. Gladly, use of pread(2) require only 1 syscall for the consumption. Let's advertise this usage by prioritizing its placement. Networking changes for 6.10.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Complete rework of garbage collection of AF_UNIX sockets. AF_UNIX is prone to forming reference count cycles due to fd passing functionality. New method based on Tarjan's Strongly Connected Components algorithm should be both faster and remove a lot of workarounds we accumulated over the years. - Add TCP fraglist GRO support, allowing chaining multiple TCP packets and forwarding them together. Useful for small switches / routers which lack basic checksum offload in some scenarios (e.g. PPPoE). - Support using SMP threads for handling packet backlog i.e. packet processing from software interfaces and old drivers which don't use NAPI. This helps move the processing out of the softirq jumble. - Continue work of converting from rtnl lock to RCU protection. Don't require rtnl lock when reading: IPv6 routing FIB, IPv6 address labels, netdev threaded NAPI sysfs files, bonding driver's sysfs files, MPLS devconf, IPv4 FIB rules, netns IDs, tcp metrics, TC Qdiscs, neighbor entries, ARP entries via ioctl(SIOCGARP), a lot of the link information available via rtnetlink. - Small optimizations from Eric to UDP wake up handling, memory accounting, RPS/RFS implementation, TCP packet sizing etc. - Allow direct page recycling in the bulk API used by XDP, for +2% PPS. - Support peek with an offset on TCP sockets. - Add MPTCP APIs for querying last time packets were received/sent/acked, and whether MPTCP "upgrade" succeeded on a TCP socket. - Add intra-node communication shortcut to improve SMC performance. - Add IPv6 (and IPv{4,6}-over-IPv{4,6}) support to the GTP protocol driver. - Add HSR-SAN (RedBOX) mode of operation to the HSR protocol driver. - Add reset reasons for tracing what caused a TCP reset to be sent. - Introduce direction attribute for xfrm (IPSec) states. State can be used either for input or output packet processing. Things we sprinkled into general kernel code -------------------------------------------- - Add bitmap_{read,write}(), bitmap_size(), expose BYTES_TO_BITS(). This required touch-ups and renaming of a few existing users. - Add Endian-dependent __counted_by_{le,be} annotations. - Make building selftests "quieter" by printing summaries like "CC object.o" rather than full commands with all the arguments. Netfilter --------- - Use GFP_KERNEL to clone elements, to deal better with OOM situations and avoid failures in the .commit step. BPF --- - Add eBPF JIT for ARCv2 CPUs. - Support attaching kprobe BPF programs through kprobe_multi link in a session mode, meaning, a BPF program is attached to both function entry and return, the entry program can decide if the return program gets executed and the entry program can share u64 cookie value with return program. "Session mode" is a common use-case for tetragon and bpftrace. - Add the ability to specify and retrieve BPF cookie for raw tracepoint programs in order to ease migration from classic to raw tracepoints. - Add an internal-only BPF per-CPU instruction for resolving per-CPU memory addresses and implement support in x86, ARM64 and RISC-V JITs. This allows inlining functions which need to access per-CPU state. - Optimize x86 BPF JIT's emit_mov_imm64, and add support for various atomics in bpf_arena which can be JITed as a single x86 instruction. Support BPF arena on ARM64. - Add a new bpf_wq API for deferring events and refactor process-context bpf_timer code to keep common code where possible. - Harden the BPF verifier's and/or/xor value tracking. - Introduce crypto kfuncs to let BPF programs call kernel crypto APIs. - Support bpf_tail_call_static() helper for BPF programs with GCC 13. - Add bpf_preempt_{disable,enable}() kfuncs in order to allow a BPF program to have code sections where preemption is disabled. Driver API ---------- - Skip software TC processing completely if all installed rules are marked as HW-only, instead of checking the HW-only flag rule by rule. - Add support for configuring PoE (Power over Ethernet), similar to the already existing support for PoDL (Power over Data Line) config. - Initial bits of a queue control API, for now allowing a single queue to be reset without disturbing packet flow to other queues. - Common (ethtool) statistics for hardware timestamping. Tests and tooling ----------------- - Remove the need to create a config file to run the net forwarding tests so that a naive "make run_tests" can exercise them. - Define a method of writing tests which require an external endpoint to communicate with (to send/receive data towards the test machine). Add a few such tests. - Create a shared code library for writing Python tests. - Add MPTCP APIs for querying last time packets were received/sent/acked and whether MPTCP "upgrade" succeeded on a TCP socket. Things we sprinkled into general kernel code: - Add bitmap_{read,write}(), bitmap_size(), expose BYTES_TO_BITS(). This required touch-ups and renaming of a few existing users. - Add Endian-dependent __counted_by_{le,be} annotations. - Make building selftests "quieter" by printing summaries like "CC object.o" rather than full commands with all the arguments. Netfilter: - Use GFP_KERNEL to clone elements, to deal better with OOM situations and avoid failures in the .commit step. BPF: - Add eBPF JIT for ARCv2 CPUs. Driver API: - Skip software TC processing completely if all installed rules are marked as HW-only, instead of checking the HW-only flag rule by rule. Tests and tooling: - Remove the need to create a config file to run the net forwarding tests so that a naive "make run_tests" can exercise them. - Define a method of writing tests which require an external endpoint to communicate with (to send/receive data towards the test machine). Add a few such tests. - Create a shared code library for writing Python tests. Expose the YAML Netlink library from tools/ to the tests for easy Netlink access. - Move netfilter tests under net/, extend them, separate performance tests from correctness tests, and iron out issues found by running them "on every commit". - Refactor BPF selftests to use common network helpers. - Further work filling in YAML definitions of Netlink messages for: nftables, team driver, bonding interfaces, vlan interfaces, VF info, TC u32 mark, TC police action. - Teach Python YAML Netlink to decode attribute policies. - Extend the definition of the "indexed array" construct in the specs to cover arrays of scalars rather than just nests. - Add hyperlinks between definitions in generated Netlink docs. The len_routes field is used to tell the size of the routes array in struct v4l2_subdev_routing. This way the number of routes returned from S_ROUTING IOCTL may be larger than the number of routes provided, in case there are more routes returned by the driver. media: v4l: Support line-based metadata capture
Many camera sensors, among other devices, transmit embedded data and image data for each CSI-2 frame. This embedded data typically contains register configuration of the sensor that has been used to capture the image data of the same frame. The embedded data is received by the CSI-2 receiver and has the same properties as the image data, including that it is line based: it has width, height and bytesperline (stride). Add these fields to struct v4l2_meta_format and document them. media: uapi: v4l: Add generic 8-bit metadata format definitions
Generic 8-bit metadata formats define the in-memory data layout but not the format of the data itself. The reasoning for having such formats is to allow CSI-2 receiver drivers to receive and DMA drivers to write the data to memory without knowing a large number of device-specific formats. Add generic serial metadata mbus formats. These formats describe data width and packing but not the content itself. The reason for specifying such formats is that the formats as such are fairly device specific but they are still handled by CSI-2 receiver drivers that should not be aware of device specific formats. What makes generic metadata formats possible is that these formats are parsed by software only, after capturing the data to system memory. ntsync: Introduce NTSYNC_IOC_CREATE_SEM.
This corresponds to the NT syscall NtCreateSemaphore(). Semaphores are one of three types of object to be implemented in this driver, the others being mutexes and events. An NT semaphore contains a 32-bit counter, and is signaled and can be acquired when the counter is nonzero. The counter has a maximum value which is specified at creation time. The initial value of the semaphore is also specified at creation time. There are no restrictions on the maximum and initial value. Each object is exposed as an file, to which any number of fds may be opened. When all fds are closed, the object is deleted. Objects hold a pointer to the ntsync_device that created them. The device's reference count is driven by struct file. Up until now the synchronization in the GPIO subsystem was broken. There was a single spinlock "protecting" multiple data structures but doing it wrong (as evidenced by several places where it would be released when a sleeping function was called and then reacquired without checking the protected state). We tried to use an RW semaphore before but the main issue with GPIO is that we have drivers implementing the interfaces in both sleeping and non-sleeping ways as well as user-facing interfaces that can be called both from process as well as atomic contexts. Both ends converge in the same code paths that can use neither spinlocks nor mutexes. The only reasonable way out is to use SRCU and go mostly lockless. To that end: we add several SRCU structs in relevant places and use them to assure consistency between API calls together with atomic reads and writes of GPIO descriptor flags where it makes sense. This code has spent several weeks in next and has received several fixes in the first week or two after which it stabilized nicely. The GPIO subsystem is now resilient to providers being suddenly unbound. We managed to also remove the existing character device RW semaphore and the obsolete global spinlock. Other than the locking rework we have one new driver (for Chromebook EC), much appreciated documentation improvements from Kent and the regular driver improvements, DT-bindings updates and GPIOLIB core tweaks. Serialization rework: - use SRCU to serialize access to the global GPIO device list, to GPIO device structs themselves and to GPIO descriptors - make the GPIO subsystem resilient to the GPIO providers being unbound while the API calls are in progress - don't dereference the SRCU-protected chip pointer if the information we need can be obtained from the GPIO device structure - move some of the information contained in struct gpio_chip to struct gpio_device to further reduce the need to dereference the former - pass the GPIO device struct instead of the GPIO chip to sysfs callback to, again, reduce the need for accessing the latter - get GPIO descriptors from the GPIO device, not from the chip for the same reason - allow for mostly lockless operation of the GPIO driver API: assure consistency with SRCU and atomic operations - remove the global GPIO spinlock - remove the character device RW semaphore Core GPIOLIB: - constify pointers in GPIO API where applicable - unify the GPIO counting APIs for ACPI and OF - provide a macro for iterating over all GPIOs, not only the ones that are requested - remove leftover typedefs - pass the consumer device to GPIO core in devm_fwnode_gpiod_get_index() for improved logging - constify the GPIO bus type - don't warn about removing GPIO chips with descriptors still held by users as we can now handle this situation gracefully - remove unused logging helpers - unexport functions that are only used internally in the GPIO subsystem - set the device type (assign the relevant struct device_type) for GPIO devices New drivers: - add the ChromeOS EC GPIO driver Driver improvements: - allow building gpio-vf610 with COMPILE_TEST as well as disabling it in menuconfig (before it was always built for i.MX cofigs) - count the number of EICs using the device properties instead of hard-coding it in gpio-eic-sprd - improve the device naming, extend the debugfs output and add lockdep asserts to gpio-sim DT bindings: - document the 'label' property for gpio-pca9570 - convert aspeed,ast2400-gpio bindings to DT schema - disallow unevaluated properties for gpio-mvebu - document a new model in renesas,rcar-gpio Documentation: - improve the character device kerneldocs in user-space headers - add proper documentation for the character device uAPI (both v1 and v2) - move the sysfs and gpio-mockup docs into the "obsolete" section - improve naming consistency for GPIO terms - clarify the line values description for sysfs - minor docs improvements - improve the driver API contract for setting GPIO direction - mark unsafe APIs as deprecated in kerneldocs and suggest replacements Other: - remove an obsolete test from selftests" * tag 'gpio-updates-for-v6.9-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brgl/linux: (79 commits) gpio: sysfs: repair export returning -EPERM on 1st attempt selftest: gpio: remove obsolete gpio-mockup test gpiolib: Deduplicate cleanup for-loop in gpiochip_add_data_with_key() dt-bindings: gpio: aspeed,ast2400-gpio: Convert to DT schema gpio: acpi: Make acpi_gpio_count() take firmware node as a parameter gpio: of: Make of_gpio_get_count() take firmware node as a parameter gpiolib: Pass consumer device through to core in devm_fwnode_gpiod_get_index() gpio: sim: use for_each_hwgpio() gpio: provide for_each_hwgpio() gpio: don't warn about removing GPIO chips with active users anymore gpio: sim: delimit the fwnode name with a ":" when generating labels gpio: sim: add lockdep asserts gpio: Add ChromeOS EC GPIO driver gpio: constify of_phandle_args in of_find_gpio_device_by_xlate() gpio: fix memory leak in gpiod_request_commit() gpio: constify opaque pointer "data" in gpio_device_find() gpio: cdev: fix a NULL-pointer dereference with DEBUG enabled gpio: uapi: clarify default_values being logical gpio: sysfs: fix inverted pointer logic gpio: don't let lockdep complain about inherently dangerous RCU usage ... |

Networking changes for 6.9.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Large effort by Eric to lower rtnl_lock pressure and remove locks: - Make commonly used parts of rtnetlink (address, route dumps etc.) lockless, protected by RCU instead of rtnl_lock. - Add a netns exit callback which already holds rtnl_lock, allowing netns exit to take rtnl_lock once in the core instead of once for each driver / callback. - Remove locks / serialization in the socket diag interface. - Remove 6 calls to synchronize_rcu() while holding rtnl_lock. - Remove the dev_base_lock, depend on RCU where necessary. - Support busy polling on a per-epoll context basis. Poll length and budget parameters can be set independently of system defaults. - Introduce struct net_hotdata, to make sure read-mostly global config variables fit in as few cache lines as possible. - Add optional per-nexthop statistics to ease monitoring / debug of ECMP imbalance problems. - Support TCP_NOTSENT_LOWAT in MPTCP. - Ensure that IPv6 temporary addresses' preferred lifetimes are long enough, compared to other configured lifetimes, and at least 2 sec. - Support forwarding of ICMP Error messages in IPSec, per RFC 4301. - Add support for the independent control state machine for bonding per IEEE 802.1AX-2008 5.4.15 in addition to the existing coupled control state machine. - Add "network ID" to MCTP socket APIs to support hosts with multiple disjoint MCTP networks. - Re-use the mono_delivery_time skbuff bit for packets which user space wants to be sent at a specified time. Maintain the timing information while traversing veth links, bridge etc. - Take advantage of MSG_SPLICE_PAGES for RxRPC DATA and ACK packets. - Simplify many places iterating over netdevs by using an xarray instead of a hash table walk (hash table remains in place, for use on fastpaths). - Speed up scanning for expired routes by keeping a dedicated list. - Speed up "generic" XDP by trying harder to avoid large allocations. - Support attaching arbitrary metadata to netconsole messages. Things we sprinkled into general kernel code -------------------------------------------- - Enforce VM_IOREMAP flag and range in ioremap_page_range and introduce VM_SPARSE kind and vm_area_[un]map_pages (used by bpf_arena). - Rework selftest harness to enable the use of the full range of ksft exit code (pass, fail, skip, xfail, xpass). Netfilter --------- - Allow userspace to define a table that is exclusively owned by a daemon (via netlink socket aliveness) without auto-removing this table when the userspace program exits. Such table gets marked as orphaned and a restarting management daemon can re-attach/regain ownership. - Speed up element insertions to nftables' concatenated-ranges set type. Compact a few related data structures. BPF --- - Add BPF token support for delegating a subset of BPF subsystem functionality from privileged system-wide daemons such as systemd through special mount options for userns-bound BPF fs to a trusted & unprivileged application. - Introduce bpf_arena which is sparse shared memory region between BPF program and user space where structures inside the arena can have pointers to other areas of the arena, and pointers work seamlessly for both user-space programs and BPF programs. - Introduce may_goto instruction that is a contract between the verifier and the program. The verifier allows the program to loop assuming it's behaving well, but reserves the right to terminate it. - Extend the BPF verifier to enable static subprog calls in spin lock critical sections. - Support registration of struct_ops types from modules which helps projects like fuse-bpf that seeks to implement a new struct_ops type. - Add support for retrieval of cookies for perf/kprobe multi links. - Support arbitrary TCP SYN cookie generation / validation in the TC layer with BPF to allow creating SYN flood handling in BPF firewalls. - Add code generation to inline the bpf_kptr_xchg() helper which improves performance when stashing/popping the allocated BPF objects. Wireless -------- - Add SPP (signaling and payload protected) AMSDU support. - Support wider bandwidth OFDMA, as required for EHT operation. Driver API ---------- - Major overhaul of the Energy Efficient Ethernet internals to support new link modes (2.5GE, 5GE), share more code between drivers (especially those using phylib), and encourage more uniform behavior. Convert and clean up drivers. - Define an API for querying per netdev queue statistics from drivers. - IPSec: account in global stats for fully offloaded sessions. - Create a concept of Ethernet PHY Packages at the Device Tree level, to allow parameterizing the existing PHY package code. - Enable Rx hashing (RSS) on GTP protocol fields. Misc ---- - Improvements and refactoring all over networking selftests. - Create uniform module aliases for TC classifiers, actions, and packet schedulers to simplify creating modprobe policies. - Address all missing MODULE_DESCRIPTION() warnings in networking. - Extend the Netlink descriptions in YAML to cover message encapsulation or "Netlink polymorphism", where interpretation of nested attributes depends on link type, classifier type or some other "class type". Drivers ------- - Ethernet high-speed NICs: - Add a new driver for Marvell's Octeon PCI Endpoint NIC VF. - Intel (100G, ice, idpf): - support E825-C devices - nVidia/Mellanox: - support devices with one port and multiple PCIe links - Broadcom (bnxt): - support n-tuple filters - support configuring the RSS key - Wangxun (ngbe/txgbe): - implement irq_domain for TXGBE's sub-interrupts - Pensando/AMD: - support XDP - optimize queue submission and wakeup handling (+17% bps) - optimize struct layout, saving 28% of memory on queues - Ethernet NICs embedded and virtual: - Google cloud vNIC: - refactor driver to perform memory allocations for new queue config before stopping and freeing the old queue memory - Synopsys (stmmac): - obey queueMaxSDU and implement counters required by 802.1Qbv - Renesas (ravb): - support packet checksum offload - suspend to RAM and runtime PM support - Ethernet switches: - nVidia/Mellanox: - support for nexthop group statistics - Microchip: - ksz8: implement PHY loopback - add support for KSZ8567, a 7-port 10/100Mbps switch - PTP: - New driver for RENESAS FemtoClock3 Wireless clock generator. - Support OCP PTP cards designed and built by Adva. - CAN: - Support recvmsg() flags for own, local and remote traffic on CAN BCM sockets. - Support for esd GmbH PCIe/402 CAN device family. - m_can: - Rx/Tx submission coalescing - wake on frame Rx - WiFi: - Intel (iwlwifi): - enable signaling and payload protected A-MSDUs - support wider-bandwidth OFDMA - support for new devices - bump FW API to 89 for AX devices; 90 for BZ/SC devices - MediaTek (mt76): - mt7915: newer ADIE version support - mt7925: radio temperature sensor support - Qualcomm (ath11k): - support 6 GHz station power modes: Low Power Indoor (LPI), Standard Power) SP and Very Low Power (VLP) - QCA6390 & WCN6855: support 2 concurrent station interfaces - QCA2066 support - Qualcomm (ath12k): - refactoring in preparation for Multi-Link Operation (MLO) support - 1024 Block Ack window size support - firmware-2.bin support - support having multiple identical PCI devices (firmware needs to have ATH12K_FW_FEATURE_MULTI_QRTR_ID) - QCN9274: support split-PHY devices - WCN7850: enable Power Save Mode in station mode - WCN7850: P2P support - RealTek: - rtw88: support for more rtw8811cu and rtw8821cu devices - rtw89: support SCAN_RANDOM_SN and SET_SCAN_DWELL - rtlwifi: speed up USB firmware initialization - rtwl8xxxu: - RTL8188F: concurrent interface support - Channel Switch Announcement (CSA) support in AP mode - Broadcom (brcmfmac): - per-vendor feature support - per-vendor SAE password setup - DMI nvram filename quirk for ACEPC W5 Pro Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEE6jPA+I1ugmIBA4hXMUZtbf5SIrsFAmXv0mgACgkQMUZtbf5S IrtgMxAAuRd+WJW++SENr4KxIWhYO1q6Xcxnai43wrNkan9swD24icG8TYALt4f3 yoT6idQvWReAb5JNlh9rUQz8R7E0nJXlvEFn5MtJwcthx2C6wFo/XkJlddlRrT+j c2xGILwLjRhW65LaC0MZ2ECbEERkFz8xcGfK2SWzUgh6KYvPjcRfKFxugpM7xOQK P/Wnqhs4fVRS/Mj/bCcXcO+yhwC121Q3qVeQVjGS0AzEC65hAW87a/kc2BfgcegD EyI9R7mf6criQwX+0awubjfoIdr4oW/8oDVNvUDczkJkbaEVaLMQk9P5x/0XnnVS UHUchWXyI80Q8Rj12uN1/I0h3WtwNQnCRBuLSmtm6GLfCAwbLvp2nGWDnaXiqryW DVKUIHGvqPKjkOOMOVfSvfB3LvkS3xsFVVYiQBQCn0YSs/gtu4CoF2Nty9CiLPbK tTuxUnLdPDZDxU//l0VArZmP8p2JM7XQGJ+JH8GFH4SBTyBR23e0iyPSoyaxjnYn RReDnHMVsrS1i7GPhbqDJWn+uqMSs7N149i0XmmyeqwQHUVSJN3J2BApP2nCaDfy H2lTuYly5FfEezt61NvCE4qr/VsWeEjm1fYlFQ9dFn4pGn+HghyCpw+xD1ZN56DN lujemau5B3kk1UTtAT4ypPqvuqjkRFqpNV2LzsJSk/Js+hApw8Y= =oY52 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'net-next-6.9' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski: "Core & protocols: - Large effort by Eric to lower rtnl_lock pressure and remove locks: - Make commonly used parts of rtnetlink (address, route dumps etc) lockless, protected by RCU instead of rtnl_lock. - Support busy polling on a per-epoll context basis. fs: FS_IOC_GETUUID
Add a new generic ioctls for querying the filesystem UUID. These are lifted versions of the ext4 ioctls, with one change: we're not using a flexible array member, because UUIDs will never be more than 16 bytes. This patch adds a generic implementation of FS_IOC_GETFSUUID, which reads from super_block->s_uuid. We're not lifting SETFSUUID from ext4 - that can be done on offline filesystems by the people who need it, trying to do it online is just asking for too much trouble. media: mc: Expand MUST_CONNECT flag to always require an enabled link
The MEDIA_PAD_FL_MUST_CONNECT flag indicates that the pad requires an enabled link to stream, but only if it has any link at all. This makes little sense, as if a pad is part of a pipeline, there are very few use cases for an active link to be mandatory only if links exist at all. A review of in-tree drivers confirms they all need an enabled link for pads marked with the MEDIA_PAD_FL_MUST_CONNECT flag. Expand the scope of the flag by rejecting pads that have no links at all. This requires modifying the pipeline build code to add those pads to the pipeline. Documentation: userspace-api: Document perf ring buffer mechanism
In the Linux perf tool, the ring buffer serves not only as a medium for transferring PMU event data but also as a vital mechanism for hardware tracing using technologies like Intel PT and Arm CoreSight, etc. Consequently, the ring buffer mechanism plays a crucial role by ensuring high throughput for data transfer between the kernel and user space while avoiding excessive overhead caused by the ring buffer itself. This commit documents the ring buffer mechanism in detail. It explains the implementation of both the regular ring buffer and the AUX ring buffer. Additionally, it covers how these ring buffers support various tracing modes and explains the synchronization with memory barriers. fbdev/intelfb: Remove driver
From looking at the PCI IDs, every device supported by intelfb is also supported by i915. Anyone still using intelfb should please move on to i915, which does everything intelfb does but better. Removing intelfb is motivated by the driver's excessive use of the global screen_info state. The state belongs to architecture and firmware code; device drivers should not attempt to access it. But fixing intelfb would require a significant change in the driver's probing logic. As intelfb has been obsolete for nearly 2 decades, it is probably not worth the effort. Let's just remove it. Another moderately busy cycle for documentation, including:
- The minimum Sphinx requirement has been raised to 2.4.4, following a warning that was added in 6.2. - Some reworking of the Documentation/process front page to, hopefully, make it more useful. - Various kernel-doc tweaks to, for example, make it deal properly with __counted_by annotations. - We have also restored a warning for documentation of nonexistent structure members that disappeared a while back. That had the delightful consequence of adding some 600 warnings to the docs build. A sustained effort by Randy, Vegard, and myself has addressed almost all of those, bringing the documentation back into sync with the code. The fixes are going through the appropriate maintainer trees. - Various improvements to the HTML rendered docs, including automatic links to Git revisions and a nice new pulldown to make translations easy to access. - Speaking of translations, more of those for Spanish and Chinese. ...plus the usual stream of documentation updates and typo fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQFDBAABCAAtFiEEIw+MvkEiF49krdp9F0NaE2wMflgFAmWcRKMPHGNvcmJldEBs d24ubmV0AAoJEBdDWhNsDH5YTKIH/AxBt/3iWt40dPf18arZHLU6tdUbmg01ttef CNKWkniCmABGKc//KYDXvjZMRDt0YlrS0KgUzrb8nIQTBlZG40D+88EwjXE0HeGP xt1Fk7OPOiJEqBZ3HEe0PDVfOiA+4yR6CmDKklCJuKg77X9atklneBwPUw/cOASk CWj+BdbwPBiSNQv48Lp87rGusKwnH/g0MN2uS0z9MPr1DYjM1K8+ngZjGW24lZHt qs5yhP43mlZGBF/lwNJXQp/xhnKAqJ9XwylBX9Wmaoxaz9yyzNVsADGvROMudgzi 9YB+Jdy7Z0JSrVoLIRhUuDOv7aW8vk+8qLmGJt2aTIsqehbQ6pk= =fCtT -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'docs-6.8' of git://git.lwn.net/linux Pull documentation update from Jonathan Corbet: "Another moderately busy cycle for documentation, including: - The minimum Sphinx requirement has been raised to 2.4.4, following a warning that was added in 6.2 - Some reworking of the Documentation/process front page to, hopefully, make it more useful - Various kernel-doc tweaks to, for example, make it deal properly with __counted_by annotations - We have also restored a warning for documentation of nonexistent structure members that disappeared a while back. Networking changes for 6.8.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Analyze and reorganize core networking structs (socks, netdev, netns, mibs) to optimize cacheline consumption and set up build time warnings to safeguard against future header changes. This improves TCP performances with many concurrent connections up to 40%. - Add page-pool netlink-based introspection, exposing the memory usage and recycling stats. This helps indentify bad PP users and possible leaks. - Refine TCP/DCCP source port selection to no longer favor even source port at connect() time when IP_LOCAL_PORT_RANGE is set. This lowers the time taken by connect() for hosts having many active connections to the same destination. - Refactor the TCP bind conflict code, shrinking related socket structs. - Refactor TCP SYN-Cookie handling, as a preparation step to allow arbitrary SYN-Cookie processing via eBPF. - Tune optmem_max for 0-copy usage, increasing the default value to 128KB and namespecifying it. - Allow coalescing for cloned skbs coming from page pools, improving RX performances with some common configurations. - Reduce extension header parsing overhead at GRO time. - Add bridge MDB bulk deletion support, allowing user-space to request the deletion of matching entries. - Reorder nftables struct members, to keep data accessed by the datapath first. - Introduce TC block ports tracking and use. This allows supporting multicast-like behavior at the TC layer. - Remove UAPI support for retired TC qdiscs (dsmark, CBQ and ATM) and classifiers (RSVP and tcindex). - More data-race annotations. - Extend the diag interface to dump TCP bound-only sockets. - Conditional notification of events for TC qdisc class and actions. - Support for WPAN dynamic associations with nearby devices, to form a sub-network using a specific PAN ID. - Implement SMCv2.1 virtual ISM device support. - Add support for Batman-avd mulicast packet type. BPF --- - Tons of verifier improvements: - BPF register bounds logic and range support along with a large test suite - log improvements - complete precision tracking support for register spills - track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers. It improves the verifier "instructions processed" metric from single digit to 50-60% for some programs - support for user's global BPF subprogram arguments with few commonly requested annotations for a better developer experience - support tracking of BPF_JNE which helps cases when the compiler transforms (unsigned) "a > 0" into "if a == 0 goto xxx" and the like - several fixes - Add initial TX metadata implementation for AF_XDP with support in mlx5 and stmmac drivers. Two types of offloads are supported right now, that is, TX timestamp and TX checksum offload. - Fix kCFI bugs in BPF all forms of indirect calls from BPF into kernel and from kernel into BPF work with CFI enabled. This allows BPF to work with CONFIG_FINEIBT=y. - Change BPF verifier logic to validate global subprograms lazily instead of unconditionally before the main program, so they can be guarded using BPF CO-RE techniques. - Support uid/gid options when mounting bpffs. - Add a new kfunc which acquires the associated cgroup of a task within a specific cgroup v1 hierarchy where the latter is identified by its id. - Extend verifier to allow bpf_refcount_acquire() of a map value field obtained via direct load which is a use-case needed in sched_ext. - Add BPF link_info support for uprobe multi link along with bpftool integration for the latter. - Support for VLAN tag in XDP hints. - Remove deprecated bpfilter kernel leftovers given the project is developed in user-space (https://github.com/facebook/bpfilter). Misc ---- - Support for parellel TC self-tests execution. - Increase MPTCP self-tests coverage. - Updated the bridge documentation, including several so-far undocumented features. - Convert all the net self-tests to run in unique netns, to avoid random failures due to conflict and allow concurrent runs. - Add TCP-AO self-tests. - Add kunit tests for both cfg80211 and mac80211. - Autogenerate Netlink families documentation from YAML spec. - Add yml-gen support for fixed headers and recursive nests, the tool can now generate user-space code for all genetlink families for which we have specs. - A bunch of additional module descriptions fixes. - Catch incorrect freeing of pages belonging to a page pool. Driver API ---------- - Rust abstractions for network PHY drivers; do not cover yet the full C API, but already allow implementing functional PHY drivers in rust. - Introduce queue and NAPI support in the netdev Netlink interface, allowing complete access to the device <> NAPIs <> queues relationship. - Introduce notifications filtering for devlink to allow control application scale to thousands of instances. - Improve PHY validation, requesting rate matching information for each ethtool link mode supported by both the PHY and host. - Add support for ethtool symmetric-xor RSS hash. - ACPI based Wifi band RFI (WBRF) mitigation feature for the AMD platform. - Expose pin fractional frequency offset value over new DPLL generic netlink attribute. - Convert older drivers to platform remove callback returning void. - Add support for PHY package MMD read/write. The first syscall simply lists the LSMs enabled, while the second and third get and set the current process' LSM attributes. Yes, these syscalls may provide similar functionality to what can be found under /proc or /sys, but they were designed to support multiple, simultaneaous (stacked) LSMs from the start as opposed to the current /proc based solutions which were created at a time when only one LSM was allowed to be active at a given time. We have spent considerable time discussing ways to extend the existing /proc interfaces to support multiple, simultaneaous LSMs and even our best ideas have been far too ugly to support as a kernel API; after +20 years in the kernel, I felt the LSM layer had established itself enough to justify a handful of syscalls. Support amongst the individual LSM developers has been nearly unanimous, with a single objection coming from Tetsuo (TOMOYO) as he is worried that the LSM_ID_XXX token concept will make it more difficult for out-of-tree LSMs to survive. Several members of the LSM community have demonstrated the ability for out-of-tree LSMs to continue to exist by picking high/unused LSM_ID values as well as pointing out that many kernel APIs rely on integer identifiers, e.g. syscalls (!), but unfortunately Tetsuo's objections remain. My personal opinion is that while I have no interest in penalizing out-of-tree LSMs, I'm not going to penalize in-tree development to support out-of-tree development, and I view this as a necessary step forward to support the push for expanded LSM stacking and reduce our reliance on /proc and /sys which has occassionally been problematic for some container users. Finally, we have included the linux-api folks on (all?) recent revisions of the patchset and addressed all of their concerns. - Add a new security_file_ioctl_compat() LSM hook to handle the 32-bit ioctls on 64-bit systems problem. This patch includes support for all of the existing LSMs which provide ioctl hooks, although it turns out only SELinux actually cares about the individual ioctls. It is worth noting that while Casey (Smack) and Tetsuo (TOMOYO) did not give explicit ACKs to this patch, they did both indicate they are okay with the changes. - Fix a potential memory leak in the CALIPSO code when IPv6 is disabled at boot. While it's good that we are fixing this, I doubt this is something users are seeing in the wild as you need to both disable IPv6 and then attempt to configure IPv6 labeled networking via NetLabel/CALIPSO; that just doesn't make much sense. Normally this would go through netdev, but Jakub asked me to take this patch and of all the trees I maintain, the LSM tree seemed like the best fit. - Update the LSM MAINTAINERS entry with additional information about our process docs, patchwork, bug reporting, etc. I also noticed that the Lockdown LSM is missing a dedicated MAINTAINERS entry so I've added that to the pull request. I've been working with one of the major Lockdown authors/contributors to see if they are willing to step up and assume a Lockdown maintainer role; hopefully that will happen soon, but in the meantime I'll continue to look after it. - Add a handful of mailmap entries for Serge Hallyn and myself. * tag 'lsm-pr-20240105' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pcmoore/lsm: (27 commits) lsm: new security_file_ioctl_compat() hook lsm: Add a __counted_by() annotation to lsm_ctx.ctx calipso: fix memory leak in netlbl_calipso_add_pass() selftests: remove the LSM_ID_IMA check in lsm/lsm_list_modules_test MAINTAINERS: add an entry for the lockdown LSM MAINTAINERS: update the LSM entry mailmap: add entries for Serge Hallyn's dead accounts mailmap: update/replace my old email addresses lsm: mark the lsm_id variables are marked as static lsm: convert security_setselfattr() to use memdup_user() lsm: align based on pointer length in lsm_fill_user_ctx() lsm: consolidate buffer size handling into lsm_fill_user_ctx() lsm: correct error codes in security_getselfattr() lsm: cleanup the size counters in security_getselfattr() lsm: don't yet account for IMA in LSM_CONFIG_COUNT calculation lsm: drop LSM_ID_IMA LSM: selftests for Linux Security Module syscalls SELinux: Add selfattr hooks AppArmor: Add selfattr hooks Smack: implement setselfattr and getselfattr hooks ... |

Documentation: move driver-api/isapnp to userspace-api/

media: v4l2-subdev: Add which field to struct v4l2_subdev_frame_interval
Due to a historical mishap, the v4l2_subdev_frame_interval structure is the only part of the V4L2 subdev userspace API that doesn't contain a 'which' field. This prevents trying frame intervals using the subdev 'TRY' state mechanism. Adding a 'which' field is simple as the structure has 8 reserved fields. This would however break userspace as the field is currently set to 0, corresponding to V4L2_SUBDEV_FORMAT_TRY, while the corresponding ioctls currently operate on the 'ACTIVE' state. We thus need to add a new subdev client cap, V4L2_SUBDEV_CLIENT_CAP_INTERVAL_USES_WHICH, to indicate that userspace is aware of this new field. All drivers that implement the subdev .get_frame_interval() and .set_frame_interval() operations are updated to return -EINVAL when operating on the TRY state, preserving the current behaviour. While at it, fix a bad copy&paste in the documentation of the struct v4l2_subdev_frame_interval_enum 'which' field. powerpc/pseries/papr-sysparm: Expose character device to user space
Until now the papr_sysparm APIs have been kernel-internal. But user space needs access to PAPR system parameters too. The only method available to user space today to get or set system parameters is using sys_rtas() and /dev/mem to pass RTAS-addressable buffers between user space and firmware. This is incompatible with lockdown and should be deprecated. So provide an alternative ABI to user space in the form of a /dev/papr-sysparm character device with just two ioctl commands (get and set). The data payloads involved are small enough to fit in the ioctl argument buffer, making the code relatively simple. Exposing the system parameters through sysfs has been considered but it would be too awkward: * The kernel currently does not have to contain an exhaustive list of defined system parameters. This is a convenient property to maintain because we don't have to update the kernel whenever a new parameter is added to PAPR. Exporting a named attribute in sysfs for each parameter would negate this. * Some system parameters are text-based and some are not. * Retrieval of at least one system parameter requires input data, which a simple read-oriented interface can't support. powerpc/pseries: Add papr-vpd character driver for VPD retrieval
PowerVM LPARs may retrieve Vital Product Data (VPD) for system components using the ibm,get-vpd RTAS function. We can expose this to user space with a /dev/papr-vpd character device, where the programming model is: struct papr_location_code plc = { .str = "", }; /* obtain all VPD */ int devfd = open("/dev/papr-vpd", O_RDONLY); int vpdfd = ioctl(devfd, PAPR_VPD_CREATE_HANDLE, &plc); size_t size = lseek(vpdfd, 0, SEEK_END); char *buf = malloc(size); pread(devfd, buf, size, 0); When a file descriptor is obtained from ioctl(PAPR_VPD_CREATE_HANDLE), the file contains the result of a complete ibm,get-vpd sequence. The file contents are immutable from the POV of user space. To get a new view of the VPD, the client must create a new handle. This design choice insulates user space from most of the complexities that ibm,get-vpd brings: * ibm,get-vpd must be called more than once to obtain complete results. * Only one ibm,get-vpd call sequence should be in progress at a time; interleaved sequences will disrupt each other. Callers must have a protocol for serializing their use of the function. * A call sequence in progress may receive a "VPD changed, try again" status, requiring the client to abandon the sequence and start over. The memory required for the VPD buffers seems acceptable, around 20KB for all VPD on one of my systems. And the value of the /rtas/ibm,vpd-size DT property (the estimated maximum size of VPD) is consistently 300KB across various systems I've checked. I've implemented support for this new ABI in the rtas_get_vpd() function in librtas, which the vpdupdate command currently uses to populate its VPD database. I've verified that an unmodified vpdupdate binary generates an identical database when using a librtas.so that prefers the new ABI. Along with the papr-vpd.h header exposed to user space, this introduces a common papr-miscdev.h uapi header to share a base ioctl ID with similar drivers to come. Create a system call lsm_get_self_attr() to provide the security module maintained attributes of the current process. Create a system call lsm_set_self_attr() to set a security module maintained attribute of the current process. Historically these attributes have been exposed to user space via entries in procfs under /proc/self/attr. The attribute value is provided in a lsm_ctx structure. The structure identifies the size of the attribute, and the attribute value. The format of the attribute value is defined by the security module. A flags field is included for LSM specific information. It is currently unused and must be 0. The total size of the data, including the lsm_ctx structure and any padding, is maintained as well. struct lsm_ctx { __u64 id; __u64 flags; __u64 len; __u64 ctx_len; __u8 ctx[]; }; Two new LSM hooks are used to interface with the LSMs. security_getselfattr() collects the lsm_ctx values from the LSMs that support the hook, accounting for space requirements. security_setselfattr() identifies which LSM the attribute is intended for and passes it along. The LSM ID values are sequential, with the oldest module LSM_ID_CAPABILITY being the lowest value and the existing modules numbered in the order they were included in the main line kernel. This is an arbitrary convention for assigning the values, but none better presents itself. The value 0 is defined as being invalid. The values 1-99 are reserved for any special case uses which may arise in the future. This may include attributes of the LSM infrastructure itself, possibly related to namespacing or network attribute management. A special range is identified for such attributes to help reduce confusion for developers unfamiliar with LSMs. LSM attribute values are defined for the attributes presented by modules that are available today. The decrease in coverage is due to code refactoring to make the ruleset management more generic (i.e. dealing with inodes and ports) that also added new WARN_ON_ONCE() checks not possible to test from user space. syzkaller has been updated accordingly [4], and such patched instance (tailored to Landlock) has been running for a month, covering all the new network-related code [5]" Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20231026014751.414649-1-konstantin.meskhidze@huawei.com [1] Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/CAHC9VhS1wwgH6NNd+cJz4MYogPiRV8NyPDd1yj5SpaxeUB4UVg@mail.gmail.com [2] Link: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next-history.git/commit/?id=c8dc5ee69d3a [3] Link: https://github.com/google/syzkaller/pull/4266 [4] Link: https://storage.googleapis.com/syzbot-assets/82e8608dec36/ci-upstream-linux-next-kasan-gce-root-ab577164.html#security%2flandlock%2fnet.c [5] * tag 'landlock-6.7-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mic/linux: selftests/landlock: Add tests for FS topology changes with network rules landlock: Document network support samples/landlock: Support TCP restrictions selftests/landlock: Add network tests selftests/landlock: Share enforce_ruleset() helper landlock: Support network rules with TCP bind and connect landlock: Refactor landlock_add_rule() syscall landlock: Refactor layer helpers landlock: Move and rename layer helpers landlock: Refactor merge/inherit_ruleset helpers landlock: Refactor landlock_find_rule/insert_rule helpers landlock: Allow FS topology changes for domains without such rule type landlock: Make ruleset's access masks more generic |

landlock: Allow FS topology changes for domains without such rule type
Allow mount point and root directory changes when there is no filesystem rule tied to the current Landlock domain. This doesn't change anything for now because a domain must have at least a (filesystem) rule, but this will change when other rule types will come. For instance, a domain only restricting the network should have no impact on filesystem restrictions. Add a new get_current_fs_domain() helper to quickly check filesystem rule existence for all filesystem LSM hooks. Remove unnecessary inlining. tools: ynl-gen: introduce support for bitfield32 attribute type
Introduce support for attribute type bitfield32. Note that since the generated code works with struct nla_bitfield32, the generator adds netlink.h to the list of includes for userspace headers in case any bitfield32 is present. Note that this is added only to genetlink-legacy scheme as requested by Jakub Kicinski. netlink: add variable-length / auto integers
We currently push everyone to use padding to align 64b values in netlink. Un-padded nla_put_u64() doesn't even exist any more. The story behind this possibly start with this thread: https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/20121204.130914.1457976839967676240.davem@davemloft.net/ where DaveM was concerned about the alignment of a structure containing 64b stats. If user space tries to access such struct directly: struct some_stats *stats = nla_data(attr); printf("A: %llu", stats->a); lack of alignment may become problematic for some architectures. These days we most often put every single member in a separate attribute, meaning that the code above would use a helper like nla_get_u64(), which can deal with alignment internally. Even for arches which don't have good unaligned access - access aligned to 4B should be pretty efficient. Kernel and well known libraries deal with unaligned input already. Padded 64b is quite space-inefficient (64b + pad means at worst 16B per attr vs 32b which takes 8B). It is also more typing: if (nla_put_u64_pad(rsp, NETDEV_A_SOMETHING_SOMETHING, value, NETDEV_A_SOMETHING_PAD)) Create a new attribute type which will use 32 bits at netlink level if value is small enough (probably most of the time?), and (4B-aligned) 64 bits otherwise. Kernel API is just: if (nla_put_uint(rsp, NETDEV_A_SOMETHING_SOMETHING, value)) Calling this new type "just" sint / uint with no specific size will hopefully also make people more comfortable with using it. Currently telling people "don't use u8, you may need the bits, and netlink will round up to 4B, anyway" is the #1 comment we give to newcomers. In terms of netlink layout it looks like this: 0 4 8 12 16 32b: [nlattr][ u32 ] 64b: [ pad ][nlattr][ u64 ] uint(32) [nlattr][ u32 ] uint(64) [nlattr][ u64 ] Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> Acked-by: Nicolas Dichtel <nicolas.dichtel@6wind.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
